Prohibition Parallel

I recently replied to a position article in the paper calling for further gun control measures after a 15-year old boy shot his brother in the face. One of the supports I used in my counter-argument was the fact that Prohibition in the early part of last century didn't work.
I remember my great aunt telling us how she and other women of her age took the solemn pledge that "lips which touch alcohol will never touch mine!" At the time I thought it was a pretty silly slogan but then it struck me how such a move amounted to sexual extortion. It sounded empty-headed but darkly manipulative at second glance. How familiar, I thought. There was also the Constitutional issue, illegal trade/manufacture/import of banned goods, and a subsequent rise in crime (which is my impression of trends in England and Australia).
Am I out of my tree or does there seem to be a threat of history repeating itself. Was that a valid support to my argument? Lend me your thoughts and suggestions.
