Problem with Winchester 1300 12g

I purchased a 1300 pump action about 3 years ago. I finally got a chance to take it out a few days ago and ran into a problem. When I cycle the fired round it only grabs 50% of the time. Then I have to sit there with a spent round in the chamber and a live one that I have to remove. I cant find anything mechanicly wrong with the gun. Has anyone else had this problem and if so any suggestions on a fix.

New or used gun?
If it's used, God only knows what could be wrong with it.

Try cleaning the extractor assembly. It could be gummed up and sticking.
Check the extractor hook to be sure it's not broken.

Clean the chamber with a shotgun CHAMBER cleaning brush.
A LOT of failures to extract on shotguns are caused by dirty or even rusted chambers.

If the chamber is rusty or really fouled, wrap some 0000 steel wool around a used shotgun bore brush.
Chuck the front section of the rod and brush in an electric drill.
Running the drill at medium speed, polish the chamber out, keeping the brush moving constantly.

Last, try a better grade of ammo. Many extraction problems are due to cheap ammo that your gun just doesn't "like".

It is a new gun. I am going to use it as my deer shotgun replacing my Mossberg 500. So I was shooting Remington slugs. The chamber and extraction assembly are in great condition but I will checking the hook with a friends 1300 to compair and see if its off. Thanks

Did you clean it before you shot it?

If not, I would get something similar to gun scrubber and give it a good cleaning. It is coated by the factory with a protective grease that can cause the cases to stick sometimes if it is not removed first.

I would think a thorough cleaning is in order like Dfariswheel suggested.
