Problem with Mini 30

Its more of the scope then the rifle, everytime I take it apart to clean, and then go shoot again, my pattern gets thrown off really bad. Ive settled on the scope wont hold zero which is a Nikon 3-9x40. Any suggestions? My rings are very secure.

It's far more likely to be a bedding issue. Field stripping it is changing the way the rifle sits in the stock. You could try glass bedding it.

cleaning the bolt face, chamber and barrel should be almost all the maintenance you would need for a good while. The bolt has low bearing surfaces and the gas piston is "self cleaning" so the gun requires almost no lubrication at all except for the knob that the operating handle connects to.

Previous post correct, I clean barrel using a bore guide from muzzle then blow out action with air use FP10 to lube and my mini-30 is good to go never jams, reloads and commerical, point of impact does not change unless I use different ammo.IMO this is one gun not to strip down completely each time its fired. If you must then action bedding is required..

It's a relatively somple DIY job if you're so inclined.
One of the best smiths for the Mini is John "Doc" Baker..."Gundoc"..

Check out the video he has online for bedding (and a few others) at the bottom of the page, here:

You can't go wrong by giving Doc the $80 to have him do it...

I followed his vid on the trigger job- did my own and the results were remarkable. A 3 lb. pull with very little takeup and no creep at all (mine is used as a bench gun primarily).

Doc also frequents the Perfect Union forum- which is the forum for Mini-14 owners. Check it out if you haven't been there...

Because the Mini is unique in that it doesn't have action screws (it is "secured" in place by the trigger group), bedding most always results in improved accuracy as it does with just about every rifle...

Some Mini 30s I have known are really tough on scopes, especially if you haven't tried to reduce the gas valve feedback with an adjustable valve.

If your Mini 30 is ejecting more than 3-4 feet - the ones I have had trouble with eject more like 20 - you may be really shocking the scope.

If the scope isn't a really good one, it could be toast in 20 rounds.
I watched a Mini-30 destroy a scope reticle in less than a box of ammo.
Broke both the horizontal and vertical threads.

Good luck with yours.

mini 14s and mini 30s stocks are very sensitive hence why some feel it should be bedded. However if you dont do a bedding job you can always be conscious of where you hold the forearm of the gun when you shoot. The best is to hold the stock or rest the stock as close to the receiver as possible.

It is not the only gun that is sensitive to the way its held. The Ruger no.1 series of rifles are also very sensitive to how they are rested and held when shooting. Using a sandbag rest or offhand will shoot 6 inches lower at 100 yards than when using a firmly attached bipod.
