My brother passed away a few months ago and he lives in Wisconsin. His wife wanted to send me a revolver that my Dad gave him years ago. She called UPS and the guy on the phone told her to bring it in and they could send it to me. When she arrived at the UPS Store, she was told they could not send it to California. She drove 30 miles to the post office only to find that she was given wrong information. It could be that the first guy she called was anti gun and wanted to cause her grief and the expense and time to come to their store. She said that they needed special numbers and could not ship it. I told her to just keep the gun and when someone drives out here they could bring it. Just thought I would pass this along to maybe save someone the trouble. All the best guys... srloren

A little more to the point, CA law requires that the gun be shipped to a CA FFL.

Federal law says no FFL is needed for an interstate inheritance. California law only follows that for what CA calls immediate family - bizarrely defined to include only parent/child/grandchild.

See the Calguns Foundation Wiki articles -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Inheriting_firearms,_both_within_California_and_Interstate and
http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Transferring_Firearms_Among_Some_Family_Members

And, the FFL requirement also involves the California Roster of Handguns - unless the transfer is inside that 'immediate family', the handgun transferred must be on the Roster.

I told her to just keep the gun and when someone drives out here they could bring it.
That would also be breaking the law, since the gun is being transferred across state lines.

The issue is addressed in detail in the Dogtown Tom's sticky. Please read it through.
