Private transfer AZ --> CA

My mom who lives in AZ informed me that she is giving me my dads shotgun and a pistol of his. I live in the great state of CA.

I've read other posts on this and am still not clear if she can directly ship them to me.

SO I have these questions for you all!

1) Can she ship the shotgun and pistol directly to me via FEDEX/USPS/UPS? OR Does she need to ship to a FFL?

2) Do I need to register these guns once I receive them? They are CA legal to own I am sure. If so, how do I do that?

3) Anything else I'm not thinking of on this? Would it be better to drive to AZ and pick them up myself? If I did, what are the consequences of this?

4) Who controls the shipment of firearms? Is it the ATF or what? I'm looking for a website that hopefully helps me out also...

Thanks in advance!

Were they left to you in the will? I know that the law sometimes treat Inheritances under a different set of rules.....

the best bet would be to look up California Law......which you could do from the Internet... but since you love in Socialistfornia I would be willing to bet it has to be an FFL to FFL transfer for the pistol. The shotgun :confused:

If your father recently passed away and your mother is acting as the executor of your father's estate, she can send them directly to you. If not, they will have to be transferred through a California dealer.

In either case, the pistol will have to be registered with the California DOJ. Some handguns cannot normally be transferred through a dealer unless they are on the approved handgun list. However, DOJ has said that a transfer from an out of state immediate family member can be exempt. Your mother would have to send a notarized letter with the handgun stating that it is a gift from her.

It is important that the California dealer receiving the firearms be consulted before shipment to insure that he understands what will be happening and to insure that you comply with his policies. You may have to shop around for a dealer willing to do the transfers at a reasonable price.

You can call the California DOJ for clarification. The number is 1-800-952-5225.

No will or estate involved. My father passed away in 1970 and my mom has always had the guns. She now says that I can have them. I'll call DOJ to ensure were legal...Thx!

You would lose. California law not only doesn't require FFL to FFL transfer, It specifically authorizes a California dealer to accept shipment of a firearm from an unlicensed resident of another state. [Penal Code section 12070(b)(14)]
