Texas is about to lose the freedom to attend and enjoy gun shows and
the freedom to make private firearm sales. This threat is real, and it
is imminent. If you want to save the gun shows, as you know them now,
you need to face the legislative threats of Senator Royce West
(D-Dallas) and Representative Debra Danburg (D-Houston) now and
face it squarely. Danburg has introduced HB 1199 and West has
introduced SB 1566.

We each need to take the following action if we want to save gun shows
as we know them in Texas.

1. Send a fax (preferred) or e-mail (some don't accept or read) to
each member of each of the committees below requesting that they
please stop this legislation in the committee. That's 16 faxes, but
nobody said it was going to be easy. Freedom isn't free! You can also
telephone.

2. Contact your personal Representative or Senator and tell them not
to let this bill come to the floor if it passes out of committee. A
certain number of legislators have to agree before a bill can come
before a legislative body for discussion or vote.

HB 1199 was referred to the House Public Safety Committee

This legislation is simply Clinton-style "gun control" to require
anyone selling a firearm at a gun show to conduct a NICS check on the
transferee. The fact that CHL licensees are exempt should be of
little consolation to those that qualify. Non-FFLs would not be able
to sell at gun shows. We already have Texas and federal laws that
prosecute anyone selling to a minor or a felon.

Current law also prohibits non-licensed individuals from "engaging in
the business" of selling firearms at shows, permitting only an
occasional sale of from one's personal collection. If these laws are
not currently being enforced by local, state, and federal officials at
gun shows, what makes anyone think another law will be? This
legislation is simply the precursor to stopping the private transfer
of firearms altogether and eliminating gun shows altogether.

It's up to you.
