Primers ?

They should all work but you will have to keep the slide clean. Sometimes power gets underneath and causes issues.

I need to buy some primers and wanted to know if their was any preferred brand
Thank you for the replies

Not for precision rifle. Board member Hummer70, who was an Aberdeen Proving Grounds Small Arms Test Director said he did a lot of testing of primers. He found every danged one of them produced more accurate ammunition in some guns and with some powders than the others did. Unfortunately, this means more testing for the precision rifle shooter, but it's doable.

For handguns, though, I think you are right that it doesn't matter a lot whose primers you are using, as long as the gun fires them consistently.

Any problems I've had have been the result of something needing a cleaning. Loose powder kernels or other residue can result in poor operations. The primer seating mechanism and bar with a hole the primer rides in can both start acting up all the sudden due to 1 or 2 small pieces of debris.

Of course I use CCI and Winchester primer 90% of the time and maybe I've just not experienced problems with other kinds of primers.

No press should not work any different with any brand of primer. They're made to an industry standard dimension.
The brand of primer used doesn't make a great deal of difference to a hunting load, but like Unclenick says, it can for target loads. Moreso for long range shooting though.

Just an FYI: Cabella's has the S&B 4.4 SP primers for sale at $20.95. They have gone up a little but they beat the $35 for CCI and WIN at the other big box stores are selling them.

I bought 2 boxes of S&B SP primers from Cabelas last sale. I used 400 of them and had 2 FTF on good primer strikes so I put them on the bottom of my stash.

The other problem I see with S&B is that they seem to be a little bigger in circumference that CCI or Federal. When dumping a box from the pickup tube into my Dillon RL550B I had to tap the tube a few times to get the last couple of them out. In addition when reloading 40 S&W I had to segregate out Herters and CBC cases because the S&Bs wouldn't seat and they also rounded out when I deprimed them.

I had to sort out a few Herters because they were 45 acp small primer pockets. I don't know where I got them other than picking them up at the range.

Just bought 7000 more of the S&B 4.4 SP. I have ran over 2000 with out a problem. I have had a FTF with cci once. Most FTF are cause by primers not properly seated.

Federals can be a little soft and deform if you apply too much pressure. Otherwise, I can't think of a difference. I use CCI when possible. I had some Winchester primers crack under 44mag pressure in RP brass.

I've used CCI for many years and 10's of thousands of rounds. I've never had a failure nor any problems with consistency, even in bench rest competition.

If have used a couple of 1000 of the S&B primers that I purchased at Cabelas when they were on sale for $17.99 (bought 10 boxes). All used in Single Action revolvers and I had no misfires.
