Okay, I've done my homework; I've handled'em, read about'em; owned and shot one almost like'em(Mod 638)and I've listened to those who own'em. I GOTTA-GOTTA have one!!

One of these is going to be my next toy. I've looked all over the internet and in the local shops. Price span is approximately $525 on the low-end to $625 on the high side. Looks like I'm going to have to shell out the shekels for one of these. Can anyone out there clue me in on a better price? I sorta doubt it but I'm still hopeful!

PS- Would I want to mess with a used one ??

I went silver. I purchased my 342ti new for a little under 500, if I remember. Like 470 or so. I then traded it and $200 for my 340sc. Not the greatest deal in the world, but I was trading a used gun which was 50-100 bucks inferior for a brand new one. Regardless, and I know people will disagree with me, I think you'd be crazy to buy a 342 when you can have the 340 for just a little more (maybe 50 bucks). I know that not everyone has 50 bucks laying around, but if you're going to spend 500 on a gun, you might as well spend 550. Some will say you'll never shoot 357s out of the 340 (I have, and it's rough), but who cares? If you do, great. If you don't, you've got an extra strong .38. Some will say that the 342 is more accurate with .38's than the 340, but accuracy is not what this gun is about. Check www.auctionarms.com and www.gunbroker.com, 340's are running around 550.

22luvr, I saw a 337PD in the used case at Georgia Range and Guns for 425.00!!! It lasted about 4 or 5 wks too, I couldn't believe it. I sold my 342PD for 480 I think. I had paid 525 new. Take your time and look around it will come. Good luck.

I had the same dilemma 2 weeks ago, I looked all over for a used or good condition one to no avail, apparently no one wants to part with them. :) I finally bit the bullet and paid $599 for a new one actually I only ponied up about $350 cash after I traded in a boat anchor (aka Taurus) that I had numerous problems with. I was not sorry in the slightest, neither will you. Good luck in your purchase!

One more thing I forgot to add, if your go used you're not covered under S&W lifetime warranty. Only the original owner is covered so it may be more advantageous to you to buy new.

I purchased a used 342 on Gunbroker for $425. It was just what I wanted and fits my needs perfectly. It handles +P defensive ammo just fine, pocket carries well, and I have confidence the .38spl +P ctg. will do its job if called upon. I believe I would be distracted from the task at hand if I were to use a .357 snubbie ESPECIALLY if it was in a lighter handgun.

Should I want to carry a 357 snubbie (for whatever reason) I also have a M60. Not everyone can purchase both and certianly not everyone wants to or finds it "fun" to fire 158gr. or 160gr. bullets out of 2" snubbies especially the lighter ones but then again, some people like to be abused too.
