Price Per Round

I am relatively new to shooting. I got my first firearm about one week before all the madness started.

IYO: How much is too much per round for .22 lr and 9 mm?

I certainly don't want to encourage the price gougers by paying more than what is reasonable. I got in late in the game, so I don't know what is reasonable.

Your thoughts?

Thanks for the link.

So the $0.10/ round for .22 and the $0.27/ round for 9 mm that I have found locally is on the lower end of the "scale".

This is w/o shipping and with sales tax.

I'll keep shopping, but it looks like the benchmark I have been using (0.10 for .22 and 0.27 for 9 mm) is not far off.

By the current market's measure, correct, those numbers are about average.

Since you said you are new to guns and to lend some perspective to why some people feel the current market is insane, here is what the price per round was before all the craziness started in 11/12:

9mm - could be found on sale for about .19 a round was normally about .23 a round (and this was for brass cased, "decent" brand name ammo)

22lr - .04 per round was the norm for the bulk packs as bricks of 500 were $20.

So the current market on 9mm is only up about 35%, but the market on 22 is up about 150% in a year.

But as always, the price of a commodity is simply what one is willing to pay for, not what some book or group of people think.

CCI .22LR Mini-Mags are $7-8 per hundred at Walmart.

For 9mm, $27-28 per hundred after tax at Walmart, and $15-16 per 50 rounds.

If I couldn't get it at or near Walmart prices, I'd just wait. Then again, I have plenty .22 and don't have any trouble finding anything else.

My .22 ammo from Walmart ranges between 4 and 6 cents per round. As far as 9mm goes I have bought a good bit of steel cased Tula for $10.17 plus tax. The brass cased 9mm has been about $14 per box. Just hit up the local walmarts or other stores daily before and after work ( lunch break too if you can)

The pre-panic pricing is what I was really looking for.
I am trying to be careful of what price I buy at, not so much for not "overspending" as much as not promoting the high prices.

Jim, up until a year ago, it didn't make sense to reload for 9mm unless you shot a couple thousand rounds a year and planned on doing it for a long time. You could find Federal 100pk's for under $20 and I constantly found myself balking on 500rd online buys for $90 or so shipped. Then it burst.

Now, those 100rd packs at Walmart are $25 (if your area gets them) and you can't find anything cheaper than that online, even remanufactured ammo is more expensive.

Now that reloading supplies are readily available, it's something to consider, even if you only shoot 9mm.

4lbs Power Pistol (5gr charge) = $75= 5600rds
115gr SWC= $250 = 4000rds
Winchester SP Primer = $140 = 4000rds
Brass= free range pickup

Do the math... works out to about .10cents/rd.

4000rds of reloading= $450
4000rds of WWB/Federal 100pk's= $1000

Lee Classic Turret Press with all the trimmings, doodads, dies, holders, scale, stuff, things= less than the difference.... heck, you're at entry-level Dillon territory there.

It's just something to think about... most guys I know don't count their reloading equipment into the equation, just like my golf buddies don't count the cost of their clubs as "expenses"... just the greens fees and tips for the cart girl. But if you do, the break-even point for 9mm (by my calculations) has now shrunk to well under 4000rds even if you go big with your initial reloading gear.

My el-cheapo reloading setup has paid for itself many MANY times over. 9mm, 45acp, 7.62x39, 30-06, 223. I only regret I can't cast bullets for the last two as they are out of gas guns.
