Price of components

I just purchased 250 rounds of Winchester White box 45ACP 230gr RN FMJ, I had to vist several local Wal/Mart stores but did find the ammunition. After purchasing I totaled up (including the tax) what I spent and discovered I had paid less for the components in the ammunition than I would have paid had I purchased the components from MidwayUSA. I didn't have to pay for shipping nor a hazmat fee, additionally MidwayUSA did not have Winchester 45acp cases, or 230grRN FMJ bullets or 231 powder but did have Winchester LP primers. The only way I could have saved money was have the cases on hand to load, if one needed cases then purchasing loaded ammunition was the most economical way to go. This isn't cost effective for one who shoots large amounts of hand gun ammunition but is if you need to buy smaller amounts. At my age "71" I will never have a need to purchase any more factory ammo plus I have enough components to finish out my plinking days. With components so difficult to find I find myself shooting less and less as the costs go up!! Oh for the good ole days!! William

WWB .45 230gr FMJ sells at about 50 cents a round in packs of 100 here in CT I can reload a LOT cheaper than that. Especially using home cast bullets or buying plated bullets in bulk.

I went to the KCI Expo gun show two week-ends ago. Ammo prices where crazy but component prices where not too bad. Large selection of powders, primers and projectiles. Most commonly used brass was more than abundant.

I think a lot of it still depends on where you are.

Luckily the local gun shops stock most of what I need for my rifle reloading.

I haven't looked yet for my .40S&W.

Luckily I have 8 shops fairly local. One a supplier of reloading goodies.

Now if only I could find some Reloader 19....

I should have included I needed factory ammunition for conceal carry, I have ammunition I had loaded but didn't think it was a good idea to use my ammunition for that purpose.. G_P is right about the cost of Winchester factory ammunition (.50 a round here also), it costs me about .31 cents a round using Winchester 230gr RN FMJ with my once fired Winchester cases. I'm not interested in plated or lead in my 1911, I prefer jacketed bullets.. I use my brass until it's lost, I don't recall losing any cases to splits, I do pitch a few when primer pockets open a bit.. William
