Price for Colt Cowboy?

I'm just getting into single action revolvers.

I found a Colt Cowboy (NIB), 45 LC, 5 1/2" barrel, blued with case hardened frame for $549.00. Is that reasonable or high?

The Colt web page said the cowboy is the budget model of the SAA Peacemaker. I would expect a price more in the $300-$400 range for a budget model. But I just don't know.

Any help would be appreciated!

Haven't seen a list price, but one I saw locally was priced w/in $10 of that. It looks like a SAA, but is not one. It has a transfer bar mech.

SAA's are/were available only out of the custom shop at 11 to 12 hundred, so I guess $550 is a budget item in comparison.

Rusty,

Thanks for the response.

It looks like the difference between the SAA and the Cowboy is the transfer bar mechanism.

I cannot determine from Colt's page what other differences make the Cowboy a budget gun compared to a Peacemaker SAA.

I'm seriously considering it since that is the only Colt single action I could find in the whole Santa Clara Valley (Cal).

Have you looked at the Ruger Vaquero or the Cimarron Firearms single actions? I haven't shot the Colt Cowboy, but have had both Vaqueros and Cimarron guns and have nothing bad to say about either of them. The Rugers are a bit bigger than Colts, but the Cimarrons are about the same size.

Somebody kick me if I'm wrong, but I also think that the Cowboy has a frame mounted firing pin rather than the hammer mounted firing pin on the Colt SAA's and the Cimarron clones, and (I think) the color case hardened look of the Cowboy (like the Ruger) is an external finish, rather than real case hardening.

I like the look of the Ruger Vaquero but the Vaquero grip results in your hand being further from the hammer than the grip on a Colt SAA. From what I understand the Colt grip and hammer placement has just the right placement for quick shooting with either one hand or thumbing with two hands.
