Price check S&W Model 66

I found a used S&W Model 66 in my gunstore today. It is about 90% condition, and has been Magna-ported (my gunsmith sent it to Magnaport personally, so I know it was done correctly.) It is wearing plastic boot grips. They are asking $289. What do you think, good deal or not?

You did not mention barrel length.

If it's a 2.5" or 3" snubby, that's a pretty good price. I still don't think it's bad for a 4" gun. Howver, get you be a little more specific as to what signs of wear it has to guess it at 90%?:)

Sorry, should have included more info. It has a 4" barrel. The inside of the barrel is bright and shiny. It has some holster wear and scratches, but that's about it. The cylinder locks up tight, and the cylinder gap seems even on all chambers. The trigger is very smooth in both SA and DA. It has a hammer-mounter firing pin.

Sorry, I don't know too much about revolvers, is there anything else I should look for?

Thanks for the link to that thread. The revolver I'm looking checks out on all of those criteria, plus the seller went down to $265, so I bought it. After I had a chance to clean it up, it's probably more like a 95% gun, so it was a good buy. I'll give you a report after I get back from the range.

In my not-so-humble opinion you got a GOOD buy! Model 66s are good guns, should give you many fine years of service.

Thanks for the help guys. I did misspeak and call it a 90% gun before. After being cleaned and inspected, I would say that it is easily a 95% gun, if not better. Its quite a shooter, too. At 35 ft, I am able to shoot one ragged hole in SA, all in the X-ring. My DA skills leave something to be desired, since its been a long time since I owned a full-sized revolver. The ports greatly reduce the muzzle flip with Rem GS 125gr .357 mag. Next week I'll try it out at 25yrds. I also ordered a set of Hogue monogrips in Goncalo Alves, which should be here on Wed.
