Could I get a price check for a S&W model 19 combat ?...
, .357 , 6" bull barrel, bomar adjustable sights, 95% blue $350

The problem is I have no idea how to purchase a revolver since I have never owned one, could I also get a few quick things to check when I go look at this pistol?

Also if this is not a good buy then what would be a good first revolver for around $350?
I would like a .44 mag but 357 ammo seems alot cheaper and since I don't load the 357 seems like the most powerful round I can afford to shoot.

Thanks !

Go to "library" link on top this page and open it. Scroll to bottom of page. "Buying a new revolver" ,,, excellent info.

Are you sure those are Bo-Mar rear sights? If so, then this was a custom installation. Model 19's came from the factory with Smith & Wesson adjustable rear sights.

Yes its been customized but the only thing I know that is different are the Bomar sights.

I was looking for info on this pistol and it seems its not good for "hot loads" ...I do not load my own ammo so I would be using cheapish factory ammo.

What is considered a 'hot load' ?

Would my money be better spent if I went with a Ruger GP 100 series 357 magnum?

I wonder why someone installed Bo-Mar sights on a six inch Model 19? Perhaps for hunting? Precision target shooting? Or maybe playing the steel silhouete game? If they were shooting steel matches they were probably pushing maximum loads through the gun. The Model 19 usually does not hold up well to those loads. If you want to shoot a lot of full power Magnums, especially the 110 or 125 grain variety, I would point you towards the GP-100 or Smith 586/686.

Consider a S&W model 686. A good used one would probably be in the $350-$375 range. Heavier frame than the model 19.

I have both and since I do, I shoot mainly .38 special in the 19 altho I do shoot a limited amount of .357 in it. After all, it was
designed for it. I don't shoot "hot" .357's in it though.
