Hello- I've come across a NIB Ruger 77R Mk. 1 in .30-06. It has a Redfield scope attached, and owner claims unfired. It is a 1991 made rifle w/ tang safety and red butt pad. Asking price is $800. Thoughts & opinions?

Are we talking new or old Redfield?

Sight unseen, I would say it is a good deal (provided the glass is in good shape). I am very cautious about buying used glass...

New ones float around the $650-750 mark (I know some are more, some less, I'm just putting it in the ballpark)

Last week I bought a scoped 1985 Ruger MkI (tang safety) chambered in .250 Savage for a little over $100 less.

M77's in .30-06 are a LOT more common & easier to find.

There is no such thing as a MK I. $800 sounds a bit high to me even for an as new common M77 with a Redfield scope. However if you like or want it the rifle may be more valuable to you. If you want it; buy it and be happy.

Correct. Normally folks refer to them as "tang safety" models and newer versions as MK-II's or Hawkeye's.

That is about double what I'd pay. In fact for about the same money you could buy a brand new Hawkeye and new Redfield scope and have a much better rifle and scope.

I agree with jmr40, a fair price for that rifle is about $450-$500 with the scope. Older Redfields, while they were a good scope, were not as good as current Leupold-made Redfields IMO (I sold those things back then, and looked through a lot of them side by side). If ya just gotta, get the price down to realistic levels, $600 max.
