I'm in the market for a S & W Model 1955 Target pistol. Could someone give me some idea of what a reasonable price I should pay for one in very good to excellent condition? Also, any one have any experience or comments on this revolver? Thanks in advance!

A pre-25 can cost a lot. I got a great deal on mine which was virtually new Pre-25 for $525 last year. I just saw one on gunbroker for over $1200 that was not nearly as nice as mine.

I think the going rate for a really nice one will set you back around a grand for a good pre-25.

Are you looking for a true Model of 1955 or a Model 25? There are some deals out there if you look hard and be patient. I got my 95+% 5 screw Pre-25 (which is the Model of 1955) for $650 last year. Model 25's can be found in the $500 price range in excellent condition.

Good advice on looking long and hard for a good pre-25. They do come out and there are some GREAT deals on them.

Here is mine:

50 shots, 15 yards.

If you look closely you will see that mine has a jeweled cock-eyed hammer, Coke bottle grips and a target trigger. The action has been worked over so the trigger is perfect.

A pre-Model 25 will cost you over $800 for one "new in box" according to Supica, but expect to pay at least $200 to $400 more because they are so scarce in mint condition. These guns should be "5-screw" models.

A Model 25, .45ACP will cost at least $550 (4-screw) or $400 (3-screw) if NIB, but expect a premium for a complete gun, box and all papers.

Collectible guns include the M25-1 variant, any of the 100 mismarked ".45 CAL. MODEL 1950" on the barrel or a variant with a factory 5" barrel. Older guns (pre 1969) have an "S" prefix to the serial number.

The 1955/Model 25 in .45 ACP is a sweet shooting gun. Mild recoil and very accurate. These were also made in .45 Colt caliber (M25-5) starting around 1978.

Does the pre 25 cost more because it's better or because it's scarcer?

THANKS!

The "pre 25's" are just earlier, and somewhat more scarce. Perhaps a bit better fitted, but all will be accurate beyond most shooters ability to appreciate. They are often refered to as "one of the most accurate revolvers I've ever seen" by those that have had them or shot them much.
