The local paper has a classified ad offering a Winchester Model 94 "Ranger" (the shorty version) in 30-30 for $150. Says it's "like new". I haven't seriously shopped rifles since I quit deer hunting years ago -- is this a good price?

Also, with the 150 gr. Silvertip ammo running 1900 fpe at the muzzle, I assume this would take care of any two-legged intruders -- or is it likely to overpenetrate?

Good Price

I think that is a good price. I would buy it. You won't find a price like that in a gun shop. And, I think it would definitely overpenetrate any two-legged intruders.

Good price. See if you can find some of the Remington Accelerator sabot ammo for the 30-30. It's a 55gn bullet doing something like 3600fps or so. Will definately minimise the overpenetration problem. Semper Fidelis...Ken M

WARNING

DO NOT load sabots in a tube fed lever action unless you plan to hand jack each round into the chamber for each shot. 30-30 rounds are very blunt nosed, in general, because most applications are in lever guns. The reason is because the rounds sit in the tube totally inline with each other. Do you want a pointy sabot bullet sitting tight against the primer ahead of it? Use blunt ammunition and save the sabots for single shots and bolt actions.

Another warning. The accuracy on Remington Accelerators and sabots in centerfires in general SUCKS (SLAP ammo might be an exception, ask the military boys about that). Don't load sabots at all. Accelerators use a commercial FMJ as well. Not likely to get the frag effect of military FMJ. It would probably just zip right through. Stick to 150grSP, though I wouldn't be comfortable using it for HD in an apartment or suburban neighborhood.

The Rem Accelerator is a soft point, not an FMJ. Might have a point about the pointy bullet, tube feed thing. I doubt there will be enough recoil to cause tube detonation, but better safe than sorry. SLAP ammo is horribly inaccurate for the most part, but you're normally trying to hit a LAV or APC so it's not a big deal. So here's an idea, load sabot in the chamber, fill the tube with 150gn hollowpoints(Winchester makes 'em)and don't miss. Since we're talking house gun, range will be short and accuracy is a minor issue. BTW my handloaded sabots do 4300fps with 55gn bullet and turn in 1" groups from my pre-64 Model 70 in 30-06. That's as good as it does with normal projectiles. It seems to vary greatly from gun to gun, though. Semper Fidelis...Ken M
