A pristine 1955 Model 25, 6 ", is up for possible sale in the area (NorCal) for $500, including a handful of half/full moons. What say you out there?

From : The Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson 2nd edition-

NIB = $550, EXC = $450, VG =$325 for the four screw model

NIB = $400, EXC = $350, VG = $300 for the three screw model

Hope this helps.

Thanks mucho-

Figgered the price to be about right. I have fired it-smooth and easy, not much different than a .38 with wadcutters!

For what's going on in California, that's a very good price.

Here in Northern Virginia I doubt if I could touch such a gun for less than $650. The large-frame Smiths are way overpriced.

Mike,

Other than scarcity of certain weapons in Virginia, why
are Smith's so over priced? I know that price's vary, as
to what region of the country one is in; but I haven't
figuered out what takes place in VA? Maybe to close
to those government bureaucrat's; like Kennedy and
Schumer, etc?

Ala Dan...

Usually because the well-taken care of ones are still great firearms. You can find very reasonably priced Smiths' even in Virginia (as IRWIN has gleefully pointed out to us from time to time! :p ) but to many owners they are good examples which demand high prices.

The art and science of used firearms pricing seems to be one part demand, one part desireability, and two parts voo-doo. The key is patience, knowledge of your market, and the willingness to keep looking every place you can. Add a dash of luck and you can find some great bargains among the high-priced examples out there.

FPrice, thanks for the info. I know generally speaking, even
dealer's here in central BamaLand have prices that on the
average are lower than most other part's of the U.S. I've
been doing business with my local dealer for over 30+
year's; even the extremely scarce and hard to get stuff,
he usually gives me a great deal on. :D :) Example:
Back about 1970-71 when Smith & Wesson model's 29
and 57 were really scarce; I bought a NIB (mahogany)
4" Smith & Wesson model 57, for the sum of $175.00.
Every other dealer was asking $225.00 and upwards
for used S&W 29's, and the sky was the limit on NIB.
Model 57's new or used, were rarely seen. :D
That is just one of many deal's, that I've been able to
conjure up. One other example, in Oct. of 98 I called
my bud on landline PX to inquire about the price of
a fixed sighted Browning Hi-Power "Practical" model.
Well, my bud wasn't in so someone else quoted me
$509.95 + 8% sales tax. Well, I eased on down after
work and found my bud; and you won't believe what
I paid for that NIB BHP "Practical", out the door for
$399.95 + tax. I feel like I got a hell'eva good deal!

You don't see many of the good large frame revolvers in Northern Virginia, for some reason.

Scarcity for some reason breeds high prices.

Most of the large frames that you do see are the 29s/629s, which are somewhat over priced, but usually not too bad, but anything that deviates from that normally is WAY over priced.

Another factor is that there aren't that many gunshops. The larger ones have a decent inventory, but charge MSRP on almost everything new and seem to jack the prices on the used ones. The smaller ones are few and far between and have a small inventory.

One of the major problems here in Massachusetts is that the anti-gun AG has imposed a series of "Consumer Protection" (read: anti-honest gun owner) regulations which have in effect banned many fine, previously safe, but now unsafe firearms. As a result, used guns with ANY desireability command a huge price.
