I found an 1897 at about 60% in good working order seems to have been used but not abused. 28 barrel ser #787xxx. If anyone can tell me when it might have been made and value. Not much of a shotgun guy other than for S/D.
That shotguns Serial # dates it about 1928. 97's are going kinda high for decent ones. One in 60% condition like you describe should bring about $350-$450 in my neck of the woods. Cowboy action shooters are buying them up and cutting the barrels for their competitions. If you get it keep it original. It is the predecessor of the M12. The only basic difference is the hammer on the 97. I have one dated about the same period that I shoot several time a year that has a polychoke on the end of the barrel. It will still break 25 straight on the skeet range.
