A local gun store has a Colt AR H-Bar National Match "shorty" with the detachable handle. Price $1,100. Is this a good deal?

Thanks,

CDNN lists a "Competition HBAR" with detachable carry handle and 20" barrel for $849. The 16" barrel model is same price. Don't know what kind of "competition" they mean...they have a 1 in 9 twist. Perhaps the shorty would work well in an IPSC environment, but then what's the point of the heavy barrel? The twist rate would make long range shooting difficult (600 yds or more).

I recently bought my first AR...I bought it specifically for NRA Highpower. I learned a lot before I bought it. Another guy at work was interested in highpower as well, but his rifle isn't suited for it very well. It's an A4 so it must compete with the Match rifle class, and it has a 1 in 9 twist, so it's having trouble at the 600 yd line. It just can't stabilize the heavy bullets that perform better in wind. On the other hand, it probably wouldn't performwell in IPSC either becuase it has a 20" heavy barrel...but the A4 part would help. He's kinda dissapointed in the whole thing.

What this all means:
What do you want to use it for? You may not decide to buy another upper for a while, so make sure that this one will perform for the kind of shooting that you'll be doing. As much as I never thought that I'd say it, AR's are kinda neat...as long as you have the right one.

My main purpose is plinking, short range varmiting (300 yds and less) and self defense. This particular model has no flash suppressor which I do not want anyway.

It says "Match Target" so I guess it is set up for that. The heavy barrel on the "shorty" does seem somewhat useless for tack driving but maybe it balances the weapon better. I will have to just fondle the thing for a few days to see if it is for me. :)

I still need to see if the trigger is a regular setup or the match trigger. The "shorty" model appeals to me due to its ease of movement. Just seems easier to me.

SKS, this is exactly what I'm talking about. "Match," "Target," "Tactical," and "Competition" seem to get applied to everything these days, and what's worse, the setups don't fit any specific use. Plinking gets old...eventually you'll want to learn to USE the rifle. Plan ahead and buy one that really makes sense. Personally, I don't see the advantage of having an HBAR shorty with a 1 in 9 twist (you don't know what twist it has, so this might not apply.) A shorty with the 1 in 9 but regular barrel makes sense, but the HBAR doesn't make sense (at least to me).

I'm not trying to harass you...it's just that I've been nitten many times because I ought a gun that didn't fit a real purpose, and later had to replace it with one that was purpose built. Deals can be had for MUCH less that the one you're looking at, and they are ALL purpose built. IF you just want a plinker and perhaps a close-in self defense gun (that would be GREAT for IPSC) try the AR15.com group buy rifle. It's a Rock River Arms M4 type that's selling for $660. Hurry to place an order.
