Price check, aisle 03A3

Found something at the gun shop that I want to run by some folks.

It is a Smith-Corona 03A3 rifle in the most beautiful condition I've ever seen on an 03.

Rifle: S/N 47133xx. Has light-gray parkerizing that is almost perfect. A couple pieces on the bolt appear to have more of a dull park/blued finish. I think it's the safety switch and the bolt release switch. There is an R stamp on a couple of the bolt pieces (including the bolt handle).

Barrel: Marked SC 6-43 with the flaming bomb. The rifling looks sharp and the bore is very shiny. There is some copper fouling noticeable from the muzzle end. Has a light-gray parkerizing in excellent shape.

Stock: Markings are rather faint except for a double circle-P on the grip (either proofed twice, or they accidently hit it twice). There are markings on the left side, but I couldn't make them out in the shop. Stock is in excellent condition with normally handling marks. No dings, scratches or gouges of note.

The gun shop says an old man brought it in that had bought it many many years ago (like 50 or something). He said that he bought a life-time membership in the NRA, and as a "gift" was able to buy this at a discount, or something like that. He said it was "un-issued" when he bought it, but it may very well be an arsenal rebuild.

The tag price was $649, but they would let me have it for $499 since they recognized me as a somewhat regular. I have the rifle on hold, just in case it turns out to be a gem. So is this a good price?

Thanks in advance for any help.

--HOLD-- 351-R41.  M1903A3, Smith-Corona, s/n 3711002 (1943).  This is a nice example of a scarce ‘03A3 variation.  The S-C 6-groove barrel is
dated 7-43, has a bright and shiny bore, TE =  2.0, MW = 0.75.  The Parkerized finish appears to be original and the stock and trigger housing are Smith-Corona,
however, the butt plate is of Remington manufacture.  The rifle contains the typically expected mix of several blued finish components.   The FJA cartouche and
Ordnance emblem are clearly visible.  Overall, this is a nice piece. - $825

One of my good friends just got the deal of a lifetime on a 1903A3 rifle.

One of his neighbors bought a 1903A3 and couldn't figure out how to get it apart to clean the cosmoline out of it. He brought it to my buddy, who in turn cleaned it all up, and before either of them really knew the value of the rifle, it traded ownership. Once my buddy had it I researched it for him and found it to be worth considerable more than the measly $300.00 he gave. What a steal. First time we shot it was using the iron sights at 500-600 meters, and it was dead on.

In today's market $499 for the rifle you describe is a good price. I'm looking for a A3 myself and would have bought it in a New York minute.

Prices on all USGI rifles are in a major inflationary spike. I went to a Milwaukee gunshow on Friday. Rifles that sold for $350 five years ago are on gunshow tables for double that price. Plain Jane Inland Carbines that went for $250 are now priced $695. WWI Springfields in good condition are $900 plus. I didn't see any A2s there but over the last year they've been typically priced $550 to $750. -- Kernel

Deal of a lifetime? I bought a 1960's DCM gun from a guy that had fired it about 50 times, and it still looks like a new rifle. The price you ask? $125.

John,

I hope you had the courtesy to at least buy that guy dinner and a show before you, er... made the "deal". -- Kernel

He was told by his wife to get it and the M1 Carbine out of the house, "or else". I really wanted the Carbine, but he kept coming down on the price of the A3 to get me to take it too, and finally I couldn't say no! :) I did pay a more reasonable $300 for his M1 Carbine, though it was also a DCM gun that he had never shot, and in mint condition. Hell, I have to be lucky now and again, just to keep my hand in the game! :D:D

JohnWill - You SOB-In Jest!!!!

Sorry, Just had to say that!!!
Went to the Monroeville (Pittsburgh, PA) Gunshow today. Small show but, 03's were going for a minimum of $365.00 to over $800.00
Wow, I'm glad that I still have my 'Remington' 03A3 that my dad bought me in '64. Sportirized (Fajen Stock/Williams Sights) but still have the 'Original' parts :)
Why don't I find 'DEALS' like this???? :(

I got my unfired remington 03A3 for 150 bucks. It was knocked down on price as it was full of iggy cosmoline. I have yet been able to bring myself to shoot it though.
