Price check 629 Classic .44 mag 5"

Well, with the Christmas bonus coming up soon I'm contemplating the purchase of what would be my first revolver. :) What really trips my trigger is the S&W (pre-sellout 3/00) 629 Classic in .44 mag with the 5" barrel.

Any ideas on what something like this might cost? Any pros/cons I should consider? I would definitely buy a pre 3/00 gun before I bought a new one... so, any of you have one for sale?

TIA

I sure love mine and NO its not for sale! I carry it as a mountain gun where any difficulties may be encountered. Its accurate and the full underlug barrel weight cuts recoil. The only problem is finding a decent holster off the shelf for 5" barrels. Other than that I really live mine. I bought a Galco Phoenix but it ain's the same holster as their 4" is....so I'm going to take a hacksaw to the holster and then have El Paso Saddlery sew it up for me. Good luck.

I expect you'll play merry hell finding a used one for sale, they tend to become treasured by their owners :p

I would guess a used one would run at least $500 or so, depending on condition. I think I paid $550 for my blued 29 Classic, it was virtually new. NO, I won't sell it or the 6.5" 629 Classic, either:D

Check the for sale forum down below. I almost just bought one for 420, including shipping. Looked great, but I really didn't need another .44 mag.

I paid...

I paid $629 for a NIB 629-6 Classic 5 inch in California a month or so ago. That was the best local price I could find.

Well folk's, I hate to spoil the party; but my Smith &
Wesson 5" barrel 629-5 isn't for sale either!:( :D I
have no idea what the going rate for these "crown
jewel's" is right now; but I will tell you what I paid
for mine, in July of 2000: $509.95 + 8% sales tax.:)
And I think I got a bargain! :D :)

My -5 model was made in 1999!

Paid $586 (excluding tax) in March 2000 for a new stainless 5" Classic, from a local dealer not known for discount prices.

I just priced my very excellent condition 6 1/2" 629 Classic to my cousin for $525.00. He thought it was a good price...but of course he "just doesn't have the money right now"

Thanks for all the replies! :) I guess I must've chosen a good model if everyone likes theirs so much. I stopped by a couple local shops yesterday and they both had it priced around $640. I'll be checking the For Sale section later today or tomorrow when I have some more time... and also finding out when the next gun shows are.

Do y'all think its worth it to buy new - with the "boycott" and all plus lack of availability in used models?

Honestly, I didn't think they'd be so expensive... when I saw the Kimbers in the case next to them I got to thinking... "Hmmm, maybe its time to get into a 1911 instead? for only a couple hundred more."

I really do want something in .44 mag though... :D
