Preventing rust while carrying

Hi, so as many of you know I am getting my beretta 92 compact INOX. I hope to have my license on wensday. I intend to carry it IWB. I sweat like a pig and I live in a humid area. As I understand the INOX version is more resistant to corrosion than the bruniton am I right? any way.... how do you prevent rust having your gun receiving all the sweat and oils from your body?

Wipe it down everyday - and leave a light coating of oil on it ( rig #2 oil is my preference - but any oil - Rem oil, etc - works. Internally keep the gun clean & properly lubed - and I would inspect it daily ...if it was damp at all....

As Jim stated put a light coat of oil on it.

Properly cleaning and maintenance will keep it from rusting.

Also look for a quality holster with a sweat guard or a later to keep the firearm from coming in contact with your skin and sweat. That'll save you a lot of trouble in the long run and is your simplest option.

You may want to look into horse hide leathers also, the denser grain means greater protection from perspiration.

Don't store the gun in the holster and wipe down the gun every day.

Has anyone treated the leather to reduce the problem ?

I'd find a different method of carrying. Oil on the gun, necessary to prevent rust will find its way into your clothes. And not oiling is going to ruin anything but a SS gun. Be open to new ideas in that regard, even if you've spent good money on an IWB holster.

Here are some arguments against an IWB: difficult and sometimes dangerous to re-holster. The same reasons are applicable to presentation from an IWB. Too, for me, I need pants one size larger than normal (belt too) to use an IWB.

Whatever you choose, leather that's been vegetable tanned is better (less tendency to rust the gun) than chrome tanned leather. Makers who use vegetable tanned hides, generally state that practice on their sites as it's a material.
Don't store the gun in the holster and wipe down the gun every day.
Yep...leather, any leather, tends to hold moisture and provide a rust environment. One of my sons hunted an entire day in the rain up in PA, carried his Smith M29 the entire time, and forgot to wipe it down in the evening...you guessed it, the next am, it was speckled with rust spots.

Hope it works out for you whatever you choose. Rod

Clean it on days where your sweat actually touches the gun

Sweat guard/good holster go a long way

Use an oil/clp known for rust protection like eezox.

Examine the gun every day for signs of rust. If you see it then you know not to repeat what caused it

There are a number of IWB holsters, mainly those that are a hybrid of leather and kydex, that have a rigid opening. These make drawing and reholstering safe, imo, as well as relatively fast. The collapsible type holsters should be avoided, imo.

Make it a daily habit to wipe it down and clean any sweat and lint off of it. Don't store it in the holster over night.

Oh man. Right up my alley.

I'm in Miami Florida. Been here all my life. I can be at a swamp in the glades and then in 30 minutes, I can be by the ocean.

My main carry guns for the past 6 years were SIGs..Been shooting them for about 10. The only way I could stop rust on the trouble spots (decocker, slide release, and grip screws) was to TIN coat them in black. Even then, the grip screws still began rusting.

So it's very hard to avoid. Not to mention the fact I live a very active lifestyle and hike, run, take the dogs to the park, kayak, etc. It's even harder to avoid.

With all that said. I've NEVER had an issue with rust on any Glocks or HKs.

I'm not too sure on Beretta.

I live on Florida's southeast coast as well. I doubt you will ever have a problem if you take it out of the holster when you get home every evening, wipe it with a dry cloth and then a lightly oiled cloth, and field strip to clean and lube once or twice a month. Berettas like to be oiled thoroughly but lightly. Leave your holster out to dry overnight, too, and if it doesn't dry well overnight you might consider getting two of the same holsters and rotate them so they dry thoroughly.

This is true. But I'm just one of those people who isn't about having a high maintenance carry gun. I did it with SIG and 1911s. Granted, they aren't necessarily "high maintenance", I just have better options available where I don't have to worry about it at all.

But yeah, what you said is 100% spot on. A silicone rag / oily rag at the end of every day and the holster under a fan at night is the most ideal prevention.

I too live in sunny, hot, humid FLA. Sweat like a pig. I would advise to put a little never seize on the grip screw threads. I have removed grip panels and had the grip screw and grip screw bushing come off as one piece. Like I said I sweat like a pig. As others have advised a daily look over and wipe down is a must. As a short story, shot a IDPA match in July-August and when drawing my 1911 had sweat dripping off the slide, like I said I sweat heavily.

I have found Corrosion X to be the best anti rust product on the market that does not use a wax . I use in for long term storage of my firearms . I also use it for many other things but the one thing that shows how well it works is a large master lock I use it on . I have a large lock outside exposed to the weather . I had been using 3n1 oil once a year on it to keep it working or it would seize up . I applied Corrosion X to the lock two years ago and it still operates like butter .

This test below shows corrosion X works better then most but not the best of all . I know for sure some of the top ranking rust preventives in this test use a wax in the product . I personally don't like to use waxes on my firearms but this test was still very informative .

Some people have corrosive sweat. Unless you're one of them, you shouldn't have a lot of problems just from humidity and sweat.

Some folks use car paste wax on their handgun... seems to help prevent rust. I've never had that problem (rust from sweat or humidity), so have never tried that technique.

I think a kydex-type holster with a shield behind the grip or rear of the slide could keep the transfer of oil to your clothes to a minimum. Any leather is going to eventually soak up sweat or oil and hold part of it, and pass the rest on.

I am open to any idea :-) for now I just have one of this like mini messenger bags that has a gun compartment. What would you suggest if concealability is top priority...

Thanks for all the advices guys... So the SS slide should be fine "no matter what" right? The frame is aluminum... does aluminum get rust? Is the bruniton finish like in the m9a1 more resistant to rust?
