So I was going through my hornady, hodgdon and lyman manuals for 45-70 lever actions data to load 300gr HP for my cva elite stalker single shot. I emailed CVA about reloading for it and they said use lever action data. in lyman it says do not exceed 28,000 CUP. Hodgdon shows every starting load for every lyman listed powder and more all over 28,000 for a start load and Hornady is also higher in some start loads than 28,000 CUP. Lyman shows IMR 4198 at 36gr and Hodgdon shows a start of 53.7gr. that's a huge jump in start loads. that CUP is 33,100 and topped out at 39,100. iMR 3031 is also way off per lyman 49th.

whats the right thing here? Hodgdon, lyman, hornady?

I did a bit of an internet search.

The answer is to call them back and ask them the same question.

I gather they say not to shoot reloads though that's standard.

45-70 should not be a problem as its straight hull and a rimmed cartridges.

Looking at the Hornady they list Trap Door, Lever Action (marlin) and Ruger number 1 in that caliber.

R-7 is a common powder to all of them, lowest in the trap door, mid in the marline and highest in the Ruger.

Looking at your Imr 4198 I don't see the issue. Hornady for a 300 gr Jacketed shows 35.8 and Lyman 36. Hornady does go higher than Lyamn by 6 grains.

That's a question to put to CVA.

This tells you what factory 45-70 is doing velocity wise. So its mid range.

Some manuals have 3 different levels for 45-70. Old trap door, moder gunsm which incude levers, and pretty much anything these days I suspect, and Ruger #1.

I wish they would do that for 44 special.
