Premium 1911 10mm

I'm going to reward myself for a recent promotion with a high-end 1911 in 10mm.

Any thoughts or preferences as to which brand? I'm currently liking the Dan Wesson Razorback and the Nighthawk Predator. I also like the STI Perfect 10, due to mag capacity.

Thoughts?

I am thinking the Nighthawk. I believe the STI might be cast frame and/or slide, which is undesirable for a 10mm. Plus i have heard recent accounts of dan wessons needing a trip back to the manufacturer

I have one of the original limited run Razorbacks and was one of the people who gave some input on 1911Forum on the design. IMHO, it was done right and is a great 10mm 1911, not a .45 1911 rebarrel in 10mm. I have hunted with, shot matches with and thoroughly enjoyed mine.

While I am not sure if, with the CZ ownership and dropped then brought back RZ10 if some of the original design features were kept that were 10mm specific enhancements. Mine is 13 years old and it is still one of my favorite handguns of all time.

If you don't consider a Wilson Combat -- you're making a big mistake in my view.

I have a pair of Wilson's ( not in 10mm) but in 9mm and .45acp...and the 9mm is 8 yrs old and has about 120,000 rds thru it / the .45 acp is about 10 yrs old and has about 25,000 rds thru it....

If you ever have a problem...wilson's warranty is 100% for the life of the gun...( I broke a plunger tube at about 110,000 rds and got the gun back in 10 days / I broke an extractor at about 75,000 and got the gun back that time in 7 days...) ..including freight both ways, etc...all free.
------------
If I had to pick a gun that was reasonably close in quality to a Wilson -- it would be an Ed Brown...( Nighthawk might barely make my list of top 5 1911 mfg's ) but STI, Dan Wesson, CZ wouldn't make my top 5 1911 mfg's ...)...based on the quality I've seen around here.

I believe the STI might be cast frame and/or slide, which is undesirable for a 10mm.

Why do you believe that? The Perfect 10 is a 2011. Do you know how STI builds a 2011? I would guess not.

The 2011 is a three-piece design. The slide, sub-frame, and grip. STI mills the slide and sub-frame from bar stock (or "billets"), and the grip is polymer.

The grip attaches to the sub-frame that has the lower rails. The slide is the same as a 1911. No metal castings involved.

The grip is injection molded polymer, but that can be replaced with a metal grip if you're adverse to the polymer grip.

Yes, they make guns in most of the popular calibers.

On their website you can see a current inventory of guns - ready for sale and shipping ....by model ---- so you don't necessarily have to wait 18 month - 2 yrs for a custom order / and they will do some modifications ( like ambi safeties to guns ready to ship)...

Quite a few available in 9mm...

At Wilson website ...go to Shop ...guns in inventory...handguns / I see at least 15 full sized CQB's in inventory in 9mm out of 25 guns or so priced from $3,000 - $3,300 all good values depending on what options you want or like ...I see 4 Protector models in stock, 2 in 9mm, priced at $4,000 - $4,150 or so... again good values if you like that model ( I like the old Protector model better...no rail, etc )...but whatever you like...

and a couple of Hunter models ..in 10mm in stock for $ 4,100 .... ( I'm not a 10mm fan ...hurts my arthritic knuckles just thinking about it ....but there is a .460 Rowland there too...)...for you guys that want something different...

but check out the inventory available...its good to see so much available these days !

I own one 10mm, a Dan Wesson Pointman. It's a nice pistol. However, it's not in the same category as the NH I own (in .45) or my older Wilson (.45). I don't think you can go wrong with either of the three.

My answer is why are Dan Wesson so great? A Wilson I can give that to ya, I don't have one to give. But a fantastic manufacturer of high end 1911s. Where the heck did the Dan Wesson come from? I don't care for Dan Wesson in my corner.

I'd also look into Guncrafter. It's possible to have them build a No Name in 10mm.

If you want something truly one-of-a-kind, contact Infinity Firearms (SVI).

Kimber?

Maybe because my LGS did not have Dan Wessons in 10 in stock, but my choice came down to a Colt Delta Elite, and a Kimber Custom. I went with the Kimber because of the supported barrel and extras like light night sights while it was "only" about 100 more than the Colt. Great pistol so far!

The Razorback was "group spec'd" by some pretty knowledgeable 10mm aficionados and, at least in the 10mm, I do think it was the best 10mm made. My .45s are other makes BTW. DW, for a time, really connected with customers and made what customers asked for...they were about the only "production" 1911 builder doing that at the time. Most 10mms are just rebarreled .45s, and that does not always work out so well. Kimber had fits with the 10mm cartridge for years. Wilson had so many problems with the 10mm that they removed them from their catalogs, then from IDPA, for many years. The threads on 1911 forum related to the design, production, parts, etc. can all be read on 1911Forum. Some of the geometry and internal work/parts specific to the 10mm may take some deeper review, but it is there.

The only issue with the Razorback was the stain leaked from the wood grips on the first batch, which they eventually fixed. Granted, DW was sold and has had some bumps along the road, but not related to the Razorback. Does the current Razorback follow the specs of the original? I do not know, but if it does, it is the best production 10mm 1911 that also would be better than many custom offerings.

Kimber?

I haven't given much thought to a Kimber, largely because the feedback on Kimber product seems to be all over the place.

As I mentioned in my post, DWs are not as nicely finished as a Wilson, Nighthawk, or Brown. However, they are a step above most 1911s.

As to "Where the heck did the Dan Wesson come from?" -- DW was founded in 1968. They started making 1911s when owned by Bob Serva and the 1911s gained a reputation for good mid-line priced pistols. CZ acquired the company in 2005 and quality has gradually increased over the years. Now, whether they still have the same value for dollar they used to have is a matter of opinion. For example, my Commander Classic (CBOB) cost about $800 in 2008. Now, CBOBs are going for about $1,450.

Is Dan Wesson still making the Titan?
It's not a true hi-cap, in that it's based on Caspian's "stack-and-a-half" frame, but it's unique, and definitely high-end.
