Preferred CCW position / rig

I have a Ruger GP-100 with a bobbed hammer and 3" bbl

I will be carrying it concealed and would like to carry all the time including work. Is it viable to conceal a medium size weapon, and if so what would be the best bosition / holster type.

or do i need to scrap the whole idea and buy a Kel-tec .380?

your thoughts?

It is certainly viable to carry that weapon, but a lot of the how depends on how you do/can dress. I work in a very relaxed office that allows jeans and an untucked polo, so I am able to carry and conceal a full size 1911 all day every day. I use a Mitch Rosen ARG on a belt from the beltman.

When I can legally carry, I generally carry a steel, Commander size 1911 in a Milt Sparks Vera Max 2 IWB holster at about 3:30 (I'm right handed). I use a good belt.

It's a fairly heavy and good size gun, albeit thin, and conceals well under a jacket or light vest.

There are a lot of different options here. Some additional information might help narrow it down. Do you sit, stand, run, drive, present at meetings, have lots of public "face time", wear a uniform, wear a suit, hike in the mountains, etc... mostly at your job? Have you carried concealed before, if so how and how did it work out? Are you smaller, average, larger, super-sized physically?

That said, I can and do carry concealed with a number of different sized pistols in different methods over the years. I prefer OWB at approximately 4 o'clock. For larger revolvers, think six inch S&W 629, generally I carry cross draw. Then again I live in Alaska, my clothing options for CC are much greater than living in Texas for example. It is indeed a rare day that I do wear anything less than a t-shirt covered by a sweatshirt when I am out and about.

My normal CCW is a G29 which is really not very small, and if I want small I go to a j-frame OWB.

Your very question is why a lot of us have more holsters than handguns! The ones that I use vary depending on the gun, and I don't have a GP100 so no straight forward answer for you there other than go to the store and try them on.

Good Luck!

Keep the Ruger. With the proper holster, you can carry it easily.

Personally, I'd carry it strong-wside, OWB in a holster designed to fit that specific gun, not one of these "fits X, Y, Z, and sometimes C guns" types. Get a good HEAVY leather belt to hang it from. Mine is a workman's belt from Tractor Supply.

FWIW - I carry a Steyr (23 oz., 3.5" barrel) .40 S&W semi in a Desantis OWB with no trouble.

You'll have to learn to start wearing untucked shirts.

It might be possible to wear the Ruger in an IWB, but I think the cylinder size would be uncomfortable. If you're gonna have to carry it with a tucked shirt, you might consider a compact (flat) semi.

That being said, the P-3AT is a fine pocket gun.

Cuba, . . . generally speaking, . . . the carry gun should be the one that you are the BEST with. Most familiar, shoot good, feel comfortable, points naturally, . . . lots of things in there.

If your revolver is all that for you, . . . go for it. Personally, I carry a full size, steel, 1911 and at least one spare mag, . . . got it on right now as I type this.

There is no weapon system out there I would trade it for (don't have enough leather for an IWB for an M60 :D ) so I have worked my wardrobe and habits so that I can carry it.

Generally, . . . I think the consensus of most folks is a strong side carry at 3:00 to 4:30 in either IWB (1st choice) or OWB (2nd choice) and sometimes shoulder holster (my personal # 1 preference), . . . but again, . . . only you can determine that, and unfortunately if you are like the most of us, . . . it will take several holsters to find out which one is the BEST for you.

And yeah, . . . not that the mouse gun is bad, . . . but hey, . . . a mouse gun is for shooting mouses, . . .

May God bless,
Dwight

On those few occasions where I'm able to carry openly or it's cold enough to justify wearing a long jacket and keep it zipped up, I greatly prefer a Yanqui style belt holster. Otherwise, I either go IWB or carry in a jacket pocket. Lots of times it's harder to store the spare mags than the pistol.

Thanks for the input

I had been hearing about everyones drawers of holsters and was hoping to avoid most of that! lol

Thasnks for the input, I am sure these questions have been asked many times before and I appreciate your continued advice and support of the noobs.

Part of the problem is that a holster is a lot like a pair of shoes. It's a matter of personal fit. My favorite holster could be torture for you, but you can't really know until you try.

Very true.

This is the reason many of us that have been carrying for a while have a box around that's full of holsters that just didn't work for us for some reason. I myself have settled on the Milt Sparks VMII, from that moment I put one on, I knew it was the one for me...I've got one for my P2KSK and SW1911PD commander. Also a good belt makes a huge difference too. ;)

I've found the choice of belt is far more important than the choice of holster. A good gun belt has to support a lot of weight on one side only, yet be conformative enough to your body that it doesn't feel like an iron girdle. That's a tough combination.

+1 to hoytinak and csmsss.

A holster is a VERY personal fit, and a good belt is MANDATORY. It MUST be able to support the gun/holster rig without sagging. There's one trick I've learned. When carrying OWB, I slide the belt through a holster loop, through a pants belt loop, and back through the second holster loop. That way, the holster is held in the middle by the pants belt loop.

There's one good thing about that. Once you find your "right" holster, you can sell the others to someone who's going through the same "pick and choose" curve.

VMII's are nice (Thanks Hoytinak), I carry a glock 31 in one to church on Sundays (it's my dress holster)

I've also had a lot of luck with the MTAC holster that www.comp-tac.com makes.

As I sit here I'm carrying a Glock 20SF (10mm upper, .45 SF lower) and a HK P7 psp, both in MTAC's, both IWB.

I've only got a t-shirt covering them and I'd say they'd pass the casual observer test.

Then again I've got a good belt on too and I buy my pants a size too large.

I think you can avoid the dreaded drawer full of holsters with a bit of careful seleciton and planning. I have a few holsters about nowadays, but they are all for different situations, and of course, different guns.

Take time to consider everything you do throughout your day and compare it with the comments here.

I used to stick with IWB because i was worried about concealment; now I more often wear OWB under an untucked shirt and or jacket. I like to have an OWB, for general comfort, and an IWB (prefereably tuckable,) for better concealement, for any carry gun. Depending on your activities, you could settle on having just one option if you don't want to buy more holsters. Some companies even have holsters that work either as IWB or OWB.

As far as rigs go, I am happy with my Hidden Ally tuckable IWB holster for my revolver. I also love my Bianchi slide holsters for both my revolver and auto. Check out Packin Heat for a good place to purchase them. I have an order in with K&D Leather but have not received it, though I am anxiously awaiting my Dakota Defender IWB which should be along anyday now.

As stated above the way you do/can dress is the biggest factor when it comes to what you can conceal. I am lucky that I do not have a stict dress code that I must follow so I can carry almost any handgun I feel like without havingto worry about it showing.

I think all of us who have been carrying for years feel that dealers should have "loaner holsters" so we could have saved a years pay in holsters.

Belly band

I also have a revolver. I have a paddle hloster and an OWB holster and I think they both show that I have it under my shirt. I tried a belly band and it holds it really close and I can put it higher or lower depending on my attire. I pretty much wear it just like an IWB. It does require some additional practice to draw with it so close to the body and sometimes higher than a traditional holter. Long story short I've found it very comfortable and concealing with my 4" revolver.
