Preban Colt CAR-15 Sporter

I found an unfired preban Colt CAR-15 Sporter. The owner wants 1400$ for it. Is this rifle worth that kind of money? If I buy it I will shoot it, I don't have any Safe Queens, so I'm curious about its real worth. If it was you, would you go for it and shoot it?

If it's NIB, untouched with all factory paper and accesories that came with it (including the box) it MIGHT be worth it. You said it was a CAR-15. Collapsable stocks do rate a premium. How old is it? If it meets all the criteria I just mentioned, I wouldn't shoot it.

If I was going to shoot it, I'd let it pass. I have an SP1, and I have a friend I shoot with that has a new Colt. We prefer to shoot his because he has a heavier barrel. It doesn't heat up nearly as bad.

Although I get tighter groups with mine, his could do the same with a little tinkering.

The biggest difference between the two is the SP1 doesn't have the 'boing'-sound of the recoil spring. That can can be somewhat distracting, but I suspect that can also be dealt with - with a heavy grease.

It's up to you, but I'd go for a $800 new one with a sweet barrel and have money left for mags and ammo. Let them collectors pay those high prices.

$1400 isn't bad, but look around; I think you can do better. Just found a Colt Match HBAR Sporter, NIB, for $1300. Price included a very nice "tactical" case and a stack of magazines. Case and mags are probably worth $200, so that's about $1100 for the gun. But as lonegunman points out, Big Brother could buy three for that price . . .

FYI the CAR 15 designation applies to ALL preban AR15 Colt SP1s. CAR means Colt Automatic Rifle.

A lot of folks think it refers just to the collapsable stock model. Not true.

You can check the serial # on AR15.com and find out exactly what model you have. The serial # is also specific to the models so you can tell if somebody made it from a different model.

If it is the collapsable stock carbine, marked as such, not a home workshop project, in mint condition, it is well worth $1400, prolly more. Maybe much more. HTH

It is a factory original collapsing stock model with an 11.5" barrel and permantly attached 4.5" flash suppressor. Original shipping box and papers are included.

Well, if it were me, and I didn't already have two pre-ban ARs (Target & LtWt) & I had the $$ I'd probably buy it.

The reason is not so much how well it shoots but more so the things I can do with it. Things like throw a suppressor on it, or a short barrel (M4) upper, collapsible stock, etc. IIRC you can do just about anything you want to a pre-ban.... with post-ban you are very limited on the changes you can make.

IMO

Not worth it to me. I think the civilian CARs are dumb looking with that giant barrel sticking out. And the collapsible stocks are flimsy. I prefer the R6000 model.
