Here is a firearms "social" issue.
The woman I've been seeing for the last two years is the best I've ever gone out with. I care for her deeply and she is wonderful. What's the rub you ask.
I'm a libertarian and have been since '86 and I have been carrying concealed for fifteen years. She is an Illinois Liberal - born that way, she is the director of equality, affirmative action and inclusion at a university. So you can kinda surmise her feeling on guns. - (though to be fair, she is coming around and will occasionally fire a gun).
I figure if James Carville and Mary Matalin can pull it off we can too!
She invited me to go with her to social event this coming Friday night that to be given by one of her co-workers for their work group and "significant other". I agreed to go (not really my scene, but it means something to her). A few days later she told me she was very pleased that I'd go with, also that the host had requested I leave my sidearm in the car because the host and in fact most of her friends are uncomfortable with "guns". I have only met a couple of her co-workers.
I understand and appreciate that every person (no matter where they were born of live - every human is a People and has certain inalienable rights) has the right to grant or limit access to their home as they see fit.
However, what I am "hearing" is that these non-gun liberals fear that a person with a gun is likely to whip it out and start blasting away at any moment. Most of these people have never met me. Yet I am judged as a potential deadly threat, not to be trusted because I carry a concealed pistol. (Btw: my occupation is private investigator).
It bothers me to be pre-judged. It also seems wrong that the "equality and inclusion" crowd is pre-judging me and all gun owners as "dangerous". Would you feel slighted or prejudiced against?
(As for guns on campus.. Students and staff are not allowed to have firearms on campus (at a state university); it was explained to me that this is ok because a student or a prof may have had a bad day and will shoot someone...what if a student doesn't like the grade they received they might shoot the teacher. - my wondering why college students would have less self-restraint than the general population when it comes to carrying a firearm was not well received.)
