Pre 64 Model 70

I just got through fondling my newest pick up, a pre 64 Model 70 in .22 Hornet. Topped with an old Weaver K4 scope, it is my new favorite. And the cream on top was that it was a first production year rifle, 4 digit serial number!! I need to calm down, but it is just too awesome and I had to share.

Of course, even all this joy must come to an end. My safe is now full and another will be required for future finds! :) I gotta think of something to convince my wife it is ok to buy an empty safe, with the expectation of filling it in the future. I can't imagine the "honey do" list she is going to put together!

I hear her calling now. Gotta go!

If your wife is into some sort of valuable collectibles perhaps you can convince her by saying you need another safe to store her valuable collectibles so why not get one a little bigger than needed for any possible future purchases either of you may make in cases either of you expands your collection.

Or a new safe - to store your state-of-the art golf clubs? (with of course a little space to spare for the odd addition in the matter of firearms you may make...) indeed - a sweet and fine find, that Winchester - congratulations and good shooting :)

Hasta pronto - Peter Knight

Salud, dinero y tiempo para disfrutarlo

Congratulations. I bought one too over a year ago. It came with a custom target barrel and had Buehler scope mounts. The trouble with my mount is that it was designed for the 1950s type scope with small eye objectives. Wanted to mount a spare Leupold Vari II 3x9 on it and found the eye objective was too large! My brother bailed my bacon out of the fire with an old Weaver K4. The bolt handle clears it nicely and so with great enthusiasm I brought it to the range with 2 boxes of .22 Hornet. Found out it was rechambered  and suspect it is .218 Bee and have to do a chamber cast sometime to confirm. Well, if nothing else, my brother got two boxes of .22 Hornet.

Since I have calmed down some, I thought I'd add a bit more. I am in the process of finding out more about the rifle using the Winchester museum in Cody, WY for some research. Apparently, there weren't too many of the .22 Hornet made that first year, mostly 30-06 according to some info in the Blue Book.

As far as the safe goes, I will definitely be looking to add another within a year. There are just too many wants still on my list! FAL308-My wife collects Precious Moments, and while some may run into the $100's, I don't think they will find their way into my safe! ;)

Gary: Could it be merely reamed out to K-Hornet? I'm away from all my reference material, so I'm not certain--but I think the sizes of the case heads are different.

I agree on making a mold of the chamber--or just see if a 218 Bee will fit...

FWIW, Art

If it is K-Hornet, you can blow out Hornet cases easily enough. You might just be able to fire the Hornet ammo. I don't like to blow cases out by firing live ammo, but I have done it with little case loss.
