Pre 64 Model 70 Win. Stuck Safety

Trying to disassemble the bolt but I can't get the 3 position safety to the intermediate position. It is stuck in the FIRE position. The bolt was in salt water and I know there is rust inside. Flooding it with a penetrant, Sea Foam Deep Creep, and then draining it produces rusty fluid. I hope and believe it is just rust keeping it from functioning properly. Has anyone run into this before? Any suggestions on what I can try to fix the problem? It will go to a smithy if I can't fix it. Thank you.
 
I would remove the bolt and soak the bolt sleeve in a good penetrant for a couple of days, then apply some force to the safety. I think it will move with some persuasion, but use judgement as you don't want to break it off.

Just how far along is the disassembly?
Do you have the bolt sleeve off of the bolt body?

I've done refitting of these safeties and related components, but it would be hard to diagnose this situation without a physical exam to determine what part(s) are failing to maneuver properly.

I have some special solution that is perfect to dissolve the rust, but the penetration into blind recesses is a real challenge, and that is why your Sea-foam will extract the easy stuff, but may take a very long time to hit bottom, if it ever reaches past any non-rust crud that may now be impacted by the rust expansion.

When the rust expands, the force goes in all directions, so don't figure that you have completely reached inside unless the parts are fairly free.

Wild: I would love to deliver it to you but every time I go to Alaska I wind up on Shemya. LOL It will go to a gunsmith next week if I have no luck with it.
Kirby: I can't get any of the bolt to come apart. Seems like it has to be in the intermediate position in order to unscrew anything. Please advise me if I am incorrect on thinking this.
Jim: That is another good suggestion I will try. I did use a wooden dowel and small hammer to give the safety some light raps. No luck yet
 
I assume you are saying that when the bolt is in the rifle and the firing pin is cocked, you can't move the safety. It is normal not to be able to move the safety when the firing pin is down or when the bolt is out of the gun.

That is correct Jim. From what I read, the bolt has to be in the rifle and the firing pin cocked. Then the safety is placed in the middle position and the bolt removed from the rifle in order to remove the firing pin.

Well, he really didn't imply that you deliver it to him, but rather a gunsmith. ;)

SeaFoam is absolutely worthless for the job at hand. Buy some Kroil. Soak the bolt in Kroil. Disassemble the bolt, clean out its innards and properly lube. Take the bolt to a gunsmith, only if you can't follow the just-given, simple, easy-to-follow instructions. :D

BTW, if you need to adjust an adjustable trigger, you won't need to take that job to a gunsmith, either!:cool:

Oh, yeah, next time you're in Alaska, and great big drops of a liquid begin to "rain" down out of the clouds, seek cover.
 
Rusty Bolt

I've had a lot of experience with rusty guns after Katrina and Wilma. If you don't have Kroil, try kerosene or diesel fuel. Give it a couple of weeks then "hit and hope".
 
Something else you can try. With the bolt out of the gun, look on the bottom of the bolt sleeve and you will see the lower rear part of the firing pin, sort of a rectangular piece of steel. Try grasping that tightly in a vise. Then pull forward on the bolt while trying to move the safety.

If that works, the situation is a worn firing pin or sear and it is gunsmith time unless you are pretty familiar with the Model 70.
