Practice range - 7 yard section

There is a 7 yard section at our local outdoor pistol range.

Is there a specific reason for that short distance?

Is this the right practice distance for a home defense handgun?
 
Statistically, most handgun engagements happen within 7 yards.

7 yards = 21 feet. An average person can cover 21 feet in 1.5 seconds.

Yes, it makes sense to be able to accurately shoot within this distance.
 
7yard training

To echo Cscoios' statement, when I took my CCW and personal protection training class, the instructor said if you should encounter an attacker and he has not stopped prior to the 21 foot range, that is the time to take action. Any closer to you than 21 feet, and your reactions may not be good enough to get the B/G before he gets to you.
 
IIRC the 7 yards originated in the original FBI pistol course around 1930. It was based on the esults of analyizing a large number of gunfights.

Keep them in a 3" circle and don't move it back till you are very good with single fire and rapid fire and holding a good group.

If you had a target down range at say 15ds and could see the bullets hit from your firing at 7yds you would get an idea of what your gun and you can do.
If you then go to the further distance you will see your groups spread.

7 and 10 is good for self defense, stay with it.

Nearly 30% of every LE qualification course I have ever seen or shot has been from the 7 yard line. Most shootouts occur from or within that distance.
