What type/brand/weight of practice ammo do most 1911 owners use? What is the cleanest. Where are the best deals online or by phone? I am shooting a Kimber Classic (full size). Is Selier & Berlott good. What about Speer Lawman.

LegalWolf,

most people practice with 230 grn FMJ.

If cheap practice ammo is what you want,
Sellier and Bellot is a good brand. Other brands I like are Fiochi, Winchester white box, Federal American Eagle, and Remington UMC. I have not shot Speer lawman, but it is considered to be a quality product.

As far as "clean", do you mean corrosive or nontoxic ? Remington and Winchester produce a brand of ammunition that doesn't have as many harmful pollutants. Check out there websites for more info. In regards to corrosive, I haven't noticed much difference between the various brands . I did have a bad experience with CCI Blazer (lots of copper shavings in the gun and poor accuracy), and others have mentioned PMC as a brand to stay away from too.

Do a search on this forum under "ammunition", you will find many postings about ordering online, price deals ect. Check out www.ammoman.com for starters.

P.S. I find Fiochi to be the most reliable and accurate out of my Kimber, granted I don't have much experience with various ammo brands. Find what works for you and stick with it

I use Georgia Arms ammo. They sell their canned heat, 500 rounds of 230gr FMJ for $115. Comes in a GI can. I personally use their 200gr plated semi-wadcutters. Also $115 for 500, $220 for a 1000. If you send them your brass, they will credit it towards your next purchase.

Their number is: 1-800-624-6861

If you shoot enough where cost matters, take up reloading. Your direct operating cost per shot is around six or seven cents with lead bullets.

If you practice enough to be competitive in IDPA or IPSC, you'll pay for the equipment in short order.

It'll also pay for itself by keeping you out of the beer-joints. :)

I was practicing with PMC FMJ (230) and switched to Selier & Berlott because of the smaller boxes (still 50 rounds, just shorter boxes). I found that the Selier & Berlott was much cleaner than the PMC...much less residue left inside the gun components. I get ripped off at $11/box for 50 rounds, but have seen it as low as $6.50/box in ads in magazines (the wife won't let me buy bulk yet). ;)

I have used a lot of PMC 230 gr. FMJ for practice before and haven't had a problem with it. Except that it does seem to be more dirty than other brands...

Based on experiences with my Sig P-220 and Kimber Custom/Classic stainless, I suggest any brand-name non-premium .45 ACP 230 grain FMJ round for plinking and non-competitive target shooting. This includes Sellier and Bellot, Federal American Eagle, Winchester White Box, Fiocchi, Remington UMC, etc.

Consider shopping the better Internet ammunition sources (Ammoman, Cheaper-than-Dirt, Natchez, etc.) for lowest price when you need to replenish your .45 ACP stock. FWIW, I have experienced excellent service and high-value pricing from ammoman.com -- and their cost includes all shipping. Also, some of the Internet ammunition sources will occasionally have surplus government issue 230 grain .45 ACP FMJ loads for sale; this is usually excellent ammunition manufactured by Federal.
