Practical Optics for Magnums

Just purchased a SW500 and would like know if holo sights would stand up to the recoil of this monstor? I like the size of the Doctor Optics but do not know anyone that has used this particular sight. Any positive or negative experiences with using a holo sight on big magnum? BTW I went with the 4" barrel.

Bears beware....

Thanks!!

The only thing I have to offer is that I had a nogunsmith clamp mount on a 41 mag and the recoil folded it up,if done again a more robst mount would be used

MarkSW500,

My best friend uses a Bushnell Holo sight on his Desert Eagle .50 AE. If you know the gun then you know the recoil is not as heavy as the 500 SW but the gun jerks alot more being an auto. He has had the gun and setup for over 4 years now and it has stood up to several thousand rounds through his gun.

On the Doctor Optics, I know they are a favorite of guys shooting the three gun competition for their shotguns. They shoot thousands of rounds of 2 3/4 12 gauge through those. I don't know how well they will handle your 500 though. Hope it helps. Have a good one.

I appreciate the input. I am little reluctant to add additional weight to an already heavy gun, but the holo sight seems to be a reasonable approach to help my aging eyes zero in better at 20+ yards out. At a little over $300 the Doctors Optics is not something that I want to buy and regret. Money is always a consideration, but I want the most reliable and effective shooting sight that I can match up to the revolver considering my intended use.

I will be using the SW500 as a source of fun for the most part (the flinch factor makes it a great source of laughter when watching my friends shoot it). I also plan on carrying it as backup when hunting dangerous game.

I realize that personal preference is greatly varied among shooters, but I am interested in what people have to say.

I've got a DocterOptic mounted on the slide of a 952.

It works great, outstanding quality. The sight takes a pretty good beating since it's mounted on the slide, but I'm not sure how that might equate to the recoil of a 500 mag. My guess is, the slide mount may acually be harder on the sight, since it's getting slammed both directions each shot.

After almost 5 cases of ammo, mine looks and works like new. The DocterOptic does come with a 2 year warranty should problems come up later.

Good Luck...

Good testimonial to an obviously rugged product. As I am new to handgun optics game, I do not know if there other comparable sights out there other than the Bushnell. Any feedback on the Doctor Optics ease of setup and effectiveness in use? Have you or anyone used other holo sites that can point positives and negatives of a holo sight setp?

Any suggestions on getting a good deal on quality holo sights?

I have a new appreciation for hearing protection....

I've had a Leupold Gilmore Red Dot on one of my Ruger 44 Mag's for 5 or 6
years with never a problem. It has had a fair amount of safe but heavy rounds fired and it has never failed me. One question I have is does anyone have any experience with type of sight and know how long a battery will last.
I change mine periodically but have never had one "dead" when I have needed it. :D

The Leupold Red Dot sure does look interesting on the revolver in photo. I am little concerned that the muzzle flash on the 4" SW500 especially with the compensator would roast the scope. I may have to stick with the iron sights and wait until someone a little more daring than me tests optics on this particular revolver.

BTW - I received more than a few strange looks and chuckles from some of senior shooters at a gun shop when I asked about putting optics on the SW500. I could sense they could not understand why I wanted to spend big $$ on a sighting system when the iron sights worked well for them. The only advice I received was find the optics with the best warranty.

Still undecided....

Thanks for the feedback..
