Powders Primers and Bullets

I still have not got my reloading bench up from moving and I need additional stock too .
I am taken a back at the prices for power, from 24.95 lb to 32.95 lb ad more.
I saw one new to me powder for 1895, for shotgun loads, at Cabelas.
Similar situation at the other chains, and the one well stocked samll gun shop is even higher.
It just doesntt cost that much to produce propellants.
I supposed politics has a hand in it.
I got into reloading to save money.
So I'm in search of Retailer either mail or store. I understand the cost of fees and transport makes ordering by mail much higher, so withing a hundred miles of Nashville Tn, or Atlanta Ga, Huntsville, Alabama who stocks, variety of propellants, primers, bullets, cases and whatever else at good to outstandingly affordable prices?
I hear of some good shops in Fla, so maybe at some time we are down that way, I can find some good sources, but not in the overcrowded areas?

My LGS goes up aprox 10% everytime they restock bullets. $33.00 for a box of 30 cal. Sierra 150 gr. Pro Hunters. Oh well, I guess until they find the limit it's to be expected. Online they're 26 to 28 plus shipping and depending on how many you buy. I would like to walk in locally and just buy one box when I need it, but I hate to get hosed just on principal. I guess I'll save up and buy five boxes at a time.

Big picture, seems like we're being encouraged to over buy

I was there a few weeks back, powder is in full supply along with primers. I don't like buying 1lb canisters unless I'm experimenting with something new, prefer 4 or 8 lb.

In Chattanooga, Tn; https://www.natchezss.com/

By the way, I use Powder Valley as a price barometer. I generally find them to have the best deals on the net, putting aside hazmet and shipping. If I can equal or beat them locally, I buy. If not, I order from them. Thankfully supply has returned to such a point that prices are reasonable.

Good luck.

In 2016 those are fair prices for powder, you won't save enough to pay for the gas or shipping to buy elsewhere. If you happen to be in an area where prices are a little less, then stock up. But I don't see more than $2-$3 difference between any stores for the same components.

Actually if you look at anything gun related today and factor in for today's wages vs wages earned 30-40 years ago everything gun related is going to require a smaller percentage of our pay than before.

In 1976 when I graduated HS the median US income was just over $11,000 per year, my dad was working in a textile mill making $4.99/hour, minimum wages were $1.95/hour. Today the median income is just under $54,000 and minimum wages are $7.25/hour. You can't expect to pay 1976 prices and earn 2016 wages.

You can still save money. A cheap box of factory 30-06 ammo is around $20-$22 for 20 rounds. A box of premium rounds will set you back around $50-$60. You can still reload cheap bullets for around $15-$18 for 20 rounds and handload premium bullets for about $20, less than factory budget loads. Most of the cost of factory loads is paying a living wage to factory workers, not components. Politics may play a minor role, but it certainly isn't the problem.

Not if you buy in bulk. Graf and sons sells Vectan by Nobel in 1.1# jugs, but they have a sale going on and no hazmat costs right now

To get the lowest cost per round, you must buy online and in bulk.

48 pounds or 50,000 primers is one Haz Mat fee. More than that equals a second Haz Mat charge. If you can't swing the amount of money or it's too much product, go in with a friend.

48 pounds of powder purchased at a time comes out to approximately $18-$20 per pound, AFTER S&H and Haz Mat. If you buy 48 pounds at a time, it's cheaper than buying locally because there is no sales tax (if purchased out of state).

Not having to pay sales tax is huge. 48 pounds of powder can run $700-1000 before S&H and Haz Mat. By not having to pay sales tax, you're saving $60-$90, which makes up for more than the Haz Mat fee.

As for the S&H, just think of all the gas you burn driving to the LGS. That's money.

Buying one pound at a time is hyper expensive. Don't think that by buying locally you're avoiding the Haz Mat fee. The LGS just reflects the Haz Mat fee, and more, in their shelf prices.
