Post your SD ammo tests

Not to pee on your cornflakes, but so-called "real world" tests are extremely unlikely to reproduce the actual terminal ballistics of bullet striking flesh, bone and organs. Aside from ballistics gelatin (which has a very specific formulation which must be followed stringently), there really is no adequate substitution for human tissue, and even then gelatin does a poor job of replicating the effect of bullet striking bone. Then there's the essentially uncontrolled and non-duplicable nature of these tests to deal with.

but wait, there's more!

Here are some 45 ACP 230gr+P Winchester Ranger T-Series that I tested the other day... The largest measurement that I got on these was 1.175", but in the pic it shows 1.130". In my homemade gelatin, it penetrates 12" exactly, and leaves a beautiful wound profile, except through the 4-layer denim test; they just dont want to open up at all. I'll get some gelatin pics taken and posted sometime soon.

I also have alot of 9mm that I have tested, and other .45's, but they will have to be left for another thread.

Here's some 9mm that I tested.

These are all different types of Winchester ammo, top and middle are 124 gr+P T-Series, through bare gelatin and 2 layers of denim. The bottom two are a 115 gr handloaded Win JHP and a 147 gr Ranger SXT.

These are 115 gr Gold Dots, the first one is bare gel, the second one is through 2 layers of denim and the last four.

These are 147 gr Federal HSTs, bare, 2 layer, and 4 layer.

These are both 147 grainers. Federal HST and a Winchester Ranger SXT, both bare gel.

These are a 115 gr Gold Dot, expanded to .937", and Federal HST, expanded to .775" and the Winchester Ranger SXT that expanded to .656" over the lead and .75" over the talons.

@ wharsmahhummer - you're saying the new T-Series won't expand after 4-layers of denim from your own tests? Are you using calibrated ballistics gel?

It is not calibrated to FBI standards, jsut homemade, off the shelf gelatin. The extent of my calibration is a BB fired at 600 fps and measuring the penetration, most of which fall within 2.5-3.5 inches. I have tried the same penetration test using water and the same results have occured, plugging up with material and not expanding, some even capable of being reloaded and shot again.

I have had trouble with the T-Series in 9mm and 45 ACP expanding in my gelatin after going through 4 layers of denim. I am using a gallon and a half of water and 20 oz. of gelatin set in a 16x4x4" mold.

Just today I went out and shot 5 more rounds into bare gelatin, to see what it would do if it encountered used gelatin, and it still performed as intended, but a couple of them did shed the talons within the first 4 inches of penetration. The expanded bullets were picture perfect and left devastating wound tracks.

I have 185 gr Golden Sabers, 165 gr+P Magtech First Defense and 230 gr HydraShoks, and 185 gr Silvertips, and they dont have as much trouble with expansion through denim, but the end diameter is nowhere near the size of the modern LEO ammunition.

Maybe I am doing something wrong, because I have debated with myself if they do the testing with the layers spread out with space between them, or if they just put the layers on the gelatin. I chose the latter because I think that the testing would be more along the lines if someone was actually wearing the clothing, but I dont know of anyone that would be wearing four pairs of pants on their torso.

Testing is performed with the denim right up against the gel.
I'll stick with Ranger T and Golden Saber [besides the fact that the T-Series are more scarce than hen's teeth]

I just got two boxes of 230 gr +P RA45TP, but one is designated SXT and the other T-Series, but when expanded they look identical. But the T-Series currently reside in both mags for my G21SF. :D

I had heard of people saying Hydro-Shocks were hit or miss on expansion, largely depending on the caliber being used (anything below .40).

After seeing these tests... I'm taking them out of my .357 mag and 9mm. Thanks for posting these tests gentlemen.
