post your scout rifle

I figure 3 out of 10 has either baught or made some type of scout rifle to play with, if you did, please either post a pic of if you cannot, tell us about it. I have experimented with 3, one on a winchester 94ae in 45 colt, worked great, deadly accurate and very handy, just wish i had started on a 30-30 instead, so i sold it, planning on using a 30-30 some day to make a simular one. second attempt was a scope an a long barreled lee enfield No4 mk II, works great at 200 yards, 5 for 5 pop can hits at that range, handleing is pretty good, a touch long for the project though. finally i tried a scout scope on a mossberg 500 riot pump. it worked for one round, on the second my home grown mount (bedding compounded on) came off and hit me in the head, that hurt. looked funny anyways. so i gave up on that. now looking into picking up an FR-8 and scout scoping that. could be interesting. Your turn.

You can scout-scope a Mosin Nagant carbine too. B-square sells the mounts. The whole deal can be done cheaply. Wish I had a picture of one done up with this mount to post but I don't. A friend let me borrow his and I was favorably impressed. The only thing I might have changed was to get some lower rings to put the scope closer to the bore axis.

Pardon my ignorance...

But what exactly is a "scout rifle"?

Is it jsut a shorter barreled rifle in the smaller cartriges? Or does it have something to do with those long-focal length scopes?

Thanks!

JT

JT, usually the barrel is shorter.

My M1A is 4" shorter and has a forward mount for long eye relief. This way you can shoot with both eyes open which helps identify multiple targets. Usually the highest magnification is 2x20 so real long shots are difficult. I have an Aimpoint on mine which is not magnified so 100 yd. shots are no problem. I haven`t tried it yet but it`s probably good out to 200 yds on "certain" targets. It`s not really good for sniping. Others here are more versed so you`ll probably get more info.

remington 600 rebarreled to 308 cry treated BBL and reciver. reciver lightened by removing metal from different areas. forend of stock shortened. trigger at a crisp 30 oz. styer flush sling swivels, gunsite ching sling, custom scope mount and burris 1.5X w/ butler creek flip up covers.
kicks like an angry mule at the range but i never seem to notice in the field.

No picture handy, sorry.

I've got a pseudo-scout based on an Oberndorf Mauser action. Remington .308 barrel (18"), Leupold scout scope mounted over the barrel, aluminum-reinforced Ramline stock, ching sling, etc. A tack driver that I got inexpensively over the 'net because the guy the gun was built for ran out of money (I paid the balance). :D

JT King,

A short light (generally bolt-action) rifle chambered for a full-power cartridge with a low power, long-eye-relief, forward mounted scope.

It's supposed to be a good general purpose rifle.

I like the scout concept. I disagree with the caliber. (I have stated my reasons elsewhere.)

I have a custom "scout": bolt-action 12 ga with extended eye-relief scope, trigger job, shortened barrel, SureFire light, Teflon coat, sling swivels added, GR sights, with Tritium front insert.

Thanks, George Stringer! :D

Savage 99 in 308, Styer Scout 3 point sling, Millett flush swivels. Ashley Outdoors sights and Scout mount,, Luepold quick detatch rings adn Scout Scope. Refinished the stock with Brownell's black crinkle paint. I do not have a picture but log onto www.Ashleyoutdoors.com and look at he sights for the 99. This is the pisctue of my rifle. It shoots like a dream.

I'll make an attempt to post a picture here. In case it doesn't work, I'll describe the rifle.

The forestock fell apart on my 1965 Ishapore Enfield 2A1 in 7.62 NATO (Sort of a No 1, Mk 3). I think the wood was done in by cosmoline-eating termites and the little spring that presses between the bayonet mount and the bottom of the barrel.

So, shorten the forestock. Get a receiver scope mount. Strip the black paint off the metal parts (Yes, the factory painted it). Cut the barrel to 21". Remove the rear sight block (required a torch and big hammer - very delicate operation). Grab a spare 3-9x40 scope from the basement junkpile. Get front sling hardware from the same pile. Polish the trigger mating surfaces. Head for the range.

The metal mostly has a coating, something like parkerized, but needs to be re-parked, blued, or whatever. This process would probably double the gun's cost, so it may never happen. Possibly some baked paint from Brownells, if the thing shoots ok.

JT,

To make a scout rifle, you take a regular short barrel bolt gun, move the scope forward, and charge $2000.00 extra.

:)

I had a genuine Cooper style scout rifle built on a 600 Rem in 308 Win. I make that claim because I got to see, handle and fire the original scout at Gunsight when I was there as an instructor.

My scout rifle had the Burris Scout Scope and mount, Galco butt stock ammo carrier and Ching Sling. It was glass beded, the stock was recontoured and refinished and a sorbithane (sp?) pad with the heel rounded was installed.

I had spent several weeks shooting this bolt gun, getting re-familiarized with handling a bolt after years of using semiauto's. I entered a local practical rifle match in which I had previously done well with both my M14 and AR15.

The match required close shots, long shots, movement and firing from a variety of positions. I came in so far behind the last place finisher that I wasn't listed on the scoreboard.

The whole scout concept is fine for a brush or rough country hunting rifle (short, light and handy). The idea of it being an all around rifle...
In my opinion if falls far short of that.

To those of you who have them and like them, more power to you. I sold the one I had and haven't missed it a bit.

Here's what i originally purchased for the scout concept:

Rem788.jpg

Remington 788 in .308 cal, 18.5" barrel, detachable 3 shot magazine. I had the stock cut about 1 1/2", and had a decelerator installed. The forward mount was never purchased, and was in use with a Leupold 3x9 in a standard setup.

Here' a so-called 'M1A scout' of mine:

This gun is far heavier than the 788.
