Possible Pig Hunt

My son may have a chance for a feral pig hunt one of these days. If it happens, is his M1 Carbine enough with FMJ or Soft Point bullets?

If not, what I have available to loan are:
7.7Jap w/ 174gr RNSP
M1 Garand (but I currently have only FMJ on hand)
A2 AR15 w/ 1:7 twist
Scoped AR15 w/ 1:8 twist

I have HPBT and FMJ from 55 to 75gr, but no real hunting bullets for the AR's.

I'll have to dig, but I may have some 150gr soft points I could load for the Garand.

For around 50 yds or so, the m1 carbine or an AR would suffice.... a scope (3x) is a must at night....

My area is heavy mesquite so all I normally use is a Ranch Rifle with a scope. Some will say that the .223 is too small but they always drop in 20 ft or so. I aim for the neck usually, sometimes low behind the front leg.

The .30 M1 round is EXTREMELY week for hunting. If your Garrand will shoot soft points, that will certainly get the job done. If it doesn't like soft points, see if either of your .223's will shoot one of the heavier bonded bullets well.

It really depends on the range of your shot Ive took a few with a 22mag & 45ACP.& quiet a few with an AR15 223 out to 200yrds. with good shot placement. good luck.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm still willing to loan him any of my firearms if this happens, but for those who say the carbine is enough, I have a follow-up question. He has PRVI 110gr soft point ammo. Is that a decent round? I can't imagine him taking a shot that would be more than 50 yards.

(He'd probably rather use his Wolf 110gr since carbine brass is so hard to get. :))

Any of the rifles mentioned is capable of taking pigs. Since you say shots are under 50 yards, I think the M1 would work fine.
Many years ago I regularly hunted a 20,000 acre property that had many feral pigs. The owner used an M1 as a truck gun that he would carry everywhere specifically for shooting pigs. While us hunters may not think the M1 30 cal. is an effective hunting round, compared to the flat shooting centerfire cartridges, this farmer is his day to day running of his property probably shot more pigs in a year than most of us would see in a lifetime.
