Florida has a new governor who has expressed a serious interest in reviewing concealed carry laws.
Since Florida is a trendsetter, what happens here could impact (you) many other states.
Recently two major newspapers in Florida have shed a lot of sunshine on the subject. With statistics, research and particular personal situations illuminated, it was award-winning caliber journalism.
Hundreds of thousands of licenses have been issued to date. Before laws were liberalized, only a few thousand people in Florida could carry.
Basically, attend a required training class, get your fingerprints processed and pay the state fee (about $115) and you can get a five year license, unless you are a criminal.
People can also generally get a CC license if they are charged (presumed innocent) with serious crimes.
Florida's CC law enforement is quite weak. A very small staff handles all new and license reissues. The state has not invested in staffing or other methods to get people who have a valid CC to voluntarily turn it in if they are convicted of a serious crime. So, some serious cases of gun violence arise.
The CC class is an absolute joke! Because it may give licensees a false sense of security, the class may do more harm than good. The license is tied to the person not the person and particular gun.
It's quite possible than some regulations or amendments to applicable laws will be enacted by the legistatute and signed by the governor.
The NRA is said to have a stong lobby position in Florida's legislature. It needs to use its influence wisely and reasonably. As responsible gun owners, we must participate in this review process.
