Portuguese Mauser

Mara

I need a little help. I have a Portuguese Mauser that says 6.5x58, but the bullet falls right out. Is there a way to tell if this has been modified to a 7x57 or a 8x57 by the markings?

Can't help with the markings, sorry. My references describe the 1904 rifle, and point out how it has several differences from the standard Mausers, and how in the 1930s some were converted to 7.92mm (8mm Mauser)

That might be what you have.
Hope this helps

any decent gunsmith will be able to measure the bore and do a chamber cast to see exactly what it is. Would be smart to have the headspace checked, once its determined what it should be.

Most of the M-1904 Mauser-Vergueiro rifles found in this country will the 1904/39 . They were rebuilt and chambered in 8x57mm Mauser [ 7.92 mm ] . They were converted into short rifles and will have large front sight wings . The rear sight will also be modified . They fire standard 8mm Mauser ammo .
