Porting on 40cal Witness P

I found a 40cal Witness P at my local dealer, and it has "porting" to keep the barrel from lifting up after each shot. (two small holes in the end of the barrel and slide) Is this good, bad, or both, and is this gun worth the $370 they want for it? I like the feel of the gun, but don't know much about the Witness P in general. How does it compare to say a H&K USP compact (twice the $ :(), or Glock 23?

The Witness is a great gun and a super value. I think that price is about right for a NIB Witness. Some shooters like porting, personally I'd rather deal with the recoil than the noise. A ported gun can permanently damage your hearing if you fire it even one time without hearing protection. It's a real issue with hunting guns (which the Witness isn't), hunting in ear plugs is not only unsafe it's impractical. For general plinking and competition shooting wearing hearing protection is no problem. -- Kernel

Thanks for the info on the noise, I'd hate to use it for personal defense and then miss hearing the cops telling me to drop my weapon when they arrive. :eek:

What about the CZ. Anyone know where I can find more info on them? I like the price of both the Witness and CZ, and have heard both are quite reliable and easy to handle.

I have a ported witness in .45. Here in south TX, gun prices are well above average and I still managed to pick my witness up for $299 (with 1 mag)in the final 20 minutes of a gun show. The cheapest local shop sells them for about $339. I would offer them less than they are asking and see what they say.
As for the quality of the gun, its combat accurate and very reliable as long as you have a good mag.
 
I have a springfield p9 which is the steel version of what you describe. The porting is great! On 150 grn and 135 grn hot loads, the porting will keep the gun nearly flat and you stay in the black during the whole recoil cycle. I would highly recommend the purchase.
