porting - how good, what type

Magna Port: single and double porting on both sides? Recoil relief and velocity loss?

Hybra Port / Weigand - is this the venturi shaped porting with graduated size larger vents toward the muzzle? Recoil relief and velocity loss?

[edit]
KKM not hybra but HYBRID porting - Don't think this is the same as Weigand ? saw a ported 17L with triple vents all same size, about .250" (guess) once. Recoil relief and velocity loss? ( used to have unported 17L and know what factory porting looked like. This wasn't factory.

The "Keeper" system pictured in older gun mag articles by Chuck Taylor with multiple machined vents ( I believe on an N frame 44 IIRC ) but never written up who did it or if they are still in business. Anyone know? If still in business, recoil relief and velocity loss?

This would be used on 57/29/25 with 4" bbl., possibly Mountain Gun or heavy bbl., short ejector rod shroud.

Any experience with any of the above would be welcomed, no... accepted with gratitude and appreciation.
My tolerance for recoil used to be:

1) 4" 44 mag full power - not controllable for personal defense

2) 4" 41 mag full power - could shoot expert ( 90+ % ) on old revolver course ( could shoot distinguished master scores on same course with 2 1/2" mod 19 and 125 gr 357 mag.
-----------------
That was when I was young and stupid and took a 14" 35 Rem barreled T/C to shoot silhouettes.
-----------------

3) Today I go out with 41 mag 3/4 power Silvertips and find them as uncontrollable to me as the 44 full powers used to be. Lack of shooting practice and a distaste for the web of my hand bleeding all over my nice blueing (OK - I'm a wimp too, but I'm 5'4", and manly enough, but at some point with my small hands there just ain't enough man there to hold onto the too big grips ).

P. S.: Purpose is to tame a heavily loaded/ heavy recoiling 3 or 4" N frame into a male purse ccw gun I can add on top of carrying/in addition to my 380 browning or my bodyguard airweight always gun when my gut tells me it's time for something bigger around but there isn't enough reason to justify a rifle or shotgun. No more editing now, I hope.

I have a Weigand Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 Magnum with a 7.5" barrel and an Aimpoint red dot sight. My wife who has been shooting a Ladysmith M36 in 38 Special finds the Weigand recoil using factory 240 grain rounds about the same as factory 125 grain rounds in the M36, and has no trouble getting good groups in double action. However, she does have trouble holding up such a heavy gun. With a short barrel and without the sight there would be more recoil. By the way Weigand does a fantastic job on the gun. The trigger action is much better than our examples from S&W.

I used to have a Taurus 605 that was factory magna-ported. Full power .357's were no problem out of the little barrel.

My N-Frame is in 45LC and sports a 3" barrel. I had it Magnaported with one cut on either side of the barrel. The muzzle flip reduced drastically. Felt recoil was also reduced. My wrist used to hurt for days after a range session. With the porting, I can shoot all day long. I highly recommend Magnaport for service and a great product. And you can send in only the frame and avoid those darn UPS charges.

Hope this helps.

I have a Taurus 605 with factory Mag-na Porting. (chadintex, what happened to yours?) I could not fire it with full house .357 rounds. Porting was necessary, and it certainly tamed the recoil.

Wife got pregnant and lost her job. Had to sell it to eat/pay bills. Replaced it with a 3" M65. I plan on getting another 605 soon though, the local shop has a nice one.

Rusty S, I have not tried the others you listed, but do own a Ruger S.B.H., which I had Magna-Ported several years ago. (Two ports.) I could tell a reduction in recoil, but increase in muzzle blast, using full house 240 gr. loads. Subjective evaluation, of course. Lately have been loading some Keith style 300 gr cast bullets, with healthy doses of H2400 and H110,and recoil is stiffer, but that's natural. As I had not shot any 300 gr bullets BEFORE having it Magna-Ported, I can't say what the recoil would be, were it not M.P'd, but imagine it would be somewhat heavier.

FWIW. Best of luck. J.B.
