Ported Taurus 38 snub question

Today I WAS gun store shopping for a highly damp proof approx 1 pound SW 38 snub. Expect to use +P loads.

But came across a titanium PORTED Taurus which could do the job BUT can’t find any ported ones on their website. taurususa.com Suspect they’ve discontinued the porting feature on snubs and this one may be a few years old – didn’t catch the model #.

Gun Mag’s article from 99 seems to like them but you KNOW how gun mags are:

My ported SW 44 mag Mtn BEAR Gun is great with 300 gr loads but porting a snub CCW revolver might introduce other problems.

Anyone with experience on this.

I have a Taurus 450 in 45 colt thats ported and a 731 in 32 H&R Mag thats ported as well as a 445 in 44 special that is not ported. Honestly I don't think the porting that they have with the six holes in the top of the barrel has much effect on the 2 inch barrels on these snub nose revolvers. People talk about the extra noise and flash but honestly these guns have plenty of noise and flash without porting. :D I believe that porting has the most effect on long barreled guns using really powerful magnum loads with plenty of powder behind them because the gas jets seems to have more effect controlling the muzzle jump with the longer moment arm of the longer barrel length. My conclusion is that the porting of the Taurus snubs is mostly for marketing and I don't think it is a reason to buy or not buy. :)

uhh. Just about every snub on their website is ported. It is actually hard to find one that isn't. If you are planning on using this firearm for self-defence then I strongly advise against a ported barrel. Getting $h*t blown into your face when firing from low retention is not conducive to good shooting.

I carry a S&W 681PC Quad Port for my duty weapon and Federal 357B 125gr JHP's for my duty load. We have to qualify with "full hip" and "low light" scenarios. Porting has caused me ZERO problems and the 357B has more muzzle flash than any 38 special you will ever shoot.

Be Safe and God Bless

Porting doesn't reduce recoil it simply redirects it. It reduces muzzle lift, reducing perceived recoil. My ported taurus 606 .357 comes stright back instead of flipping the muzzle up. It has very little muzzle lift.

I've fired both my Ruger SP101 and the Taurus at night and couldn't tell much difference in muzzle flash. As for the noise issue, i can't comment on that. I always wear ear protection when i shoot.

You will not notice muzzle flash or worry about the direction of the escaping gases when someone is trying to take your life. Use what you are comfortable with.

why didn’t I think....

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I’d heard that porting might blow stuff into your face at low retention and this probably was the only possible negative, but decided to see what experienced folks like you would say.
In the ‘why didn’t I think of that before?’ category: Will take the ported 44 mag to the range and fire a few 44 specials – with goggles then maybe glasses.

The porting may take off about 50-80 fps or so as I recall from about 15 yrs ago when I was into this stuff more -- at least thru a longer tube. The snub is already at a bit of disadvantage on that front.

Since titanium is inert (virtually water proof!!), the Taurus contains considerably more than SW and with their life-time warranty thought it was at least a consideration. Resale value is not an issue.
