ported barrel carbine

I'm considering buying a Marlin lever-action carbine in .44 Magnum. One can go ported or unported (a bit longer) for the barrel. Any thoughts on which is more advisable?

Ported.

While a bit louder and more annoying to your neighbors, so is a more-powerful caliber. You gain lots in terms of shootability and comfort as well as an appreciable decrease in recovery time and time between shots. The extra 2-4 inches you'd get are almost lost on the 44 Magnum. The 44, being a low-velocity number gets most of its velocity in the first 10-16 inches of barrel. Longer barrels are a better investment on fast numbers like the 22-250 and 243, but aren't really necessary on slow bullets.
