Hunting grouse in Wisconsin, my brother happened upon a large porcupine carcass (torn to shreds). What natural predator could have done this? Thanks!

A Fisher (looks much like a huge Mink). Fishers were released several years ago in Michigan's upper peninsula in an attempt to re-establish the population in Michigan. It was said then that they preyed mostly on Porcupines. But I would not be 100% sure that they are the only animal that can successfully attack a Porcupine.

Fishers and Pine Martens both will prey on Porcupines. Both are found in Wisconsin. But a carcass torn to shreds would be hard to tell, since eagles, crows, bears and other animals would eat it as carrion if it had been killed by some other means.

Once they are on their back its all over for them.
A fisher will knock a Quill Pig out of a tree and it is said they can run down a tree faster than a fall from said tree so they are doing their thing soon after the Pig hits the ground.
But like stated, it may have expired from some other reason and then its just lunch for the next passer-by.
Many people kill them to prevent tree damage. they can be a target of opertunity for young shooters.

........and I know of very few with bird dogs in Wisconsin that let them escape.

Well, about 18 years ago, my brother had another dog and it mixed it up with a porcupine, and it was full of quills for its efforts. Also, hunting out west and using hunting guides and dogs, my brother got to experience the same trouble with porcupines and bird dogs. That hunt was messed up too!

A porcupine is good eating too. Once dead they are easily handled.
There was a urban legend many years ago where we were under the belief that it was illegal to kill a Porky or a Spruce Grouse because they were critters one could take if in a survival situation without a gun (like a stick).
Also we were in the belief that a salt lick was illegal and Conservation officers knew everyone (almost), believed that and kept quiet about it until they proposed to make all baiting except salt licks illegal.
