Poly finish on a existing finish (Rem CDL)

I have a new Remington CDL and I’m wanting to apply a poly treatment in the wood with a product like Permalyn either the sealer or finish. The question is can this be done without stripping the existing finish from the rifle stock? I like the color just wanting to smooth it out to a more refined finish.
 
I imagine it could, but you would have to strip the stock of any wax, oil, etc. I would go over it with 0000 steel wool, so the new finish will adhere.
