Don't wish to invade privacy, so feel more than free not to participate or, if you vote, not to post. But I am interested in the incidence - likelihood - of any of us being involved in violent crime. So, I thought a fair place to start was here.

So, the question would be: have you been the personal victim of a violent street or house-crime, (meaning against your person) - or of an attempted one? Violent crime would mean being robbed on the street - or in your home while you were there, assaulted with or without deadly weapon, raped, or (unlikely) kidnapped.

An attempt would be such an incident that was imminently about to occur but which was truncated by your flight, taking defensive action, or intervention by Police or others.

I also wonder what the general stats are for the general population of the US for the same question: i.e.: what is likelihood of such an attack. Never saw info on this. Anyone know of any?

I have not been such a victim by the way, hope I never will, and consider myself lucky that but for the grace of God......

When you are out of state on a job. When you end up living in a motel on Brookpark Rd for months.
When the job does not allow it and send you off to a distant place or region you may decide to stand back and comply with the guy wielding the big knife. 10" fixed blade.

I was mugged years ago in NYC (hard to believe these things happen in that fine city ;) ) and I have opened the door to someone in a USPS uniform who's special delivery was via a sawed off shotgun. It appeared to have an 12 inch barrel and (at the time I was looking down it) a 4 inch bore!

There ought to be a law against such short shotguns!

There are a few times. Fortunately nothing happened to me or the bad guys. It's amazing how quickly things can settle down when perps realize that their victim selection process failed.

My brother, a freind and I were confronted by three grown men while on a camping trip when we were in high school. I showed I had a gun and told them to leave. When one man went for my brother I leveled the Marlin 39A at him and started squeezing the trigger. He stopped and I stopped. They went away. I will never forget how close I came to shooting someone. I know in my heart now I can do it as there was no hesitation when crunch time was at hand. If he had not stopped I would have shot him. I have always hoped I would never have to use a gun to save a life, but I will if necessary.

Almost...I was more confused than frightened when 2 pathetic idiots tried to mug me and suddenly one of them got punched in the face by a friend of mine (who was a little behind me because he though he had forgotten to lock his car) the other one looked shocked and soon received the same treatment from me. Ha, that was fun:D (well, thinking about it afterwards)I was glad they didn't have a knife or a gun or something, but they will think twice about doing that sort of thing again. Does that count as I have, or I have not?

IU was stabbed several times in 2003. If I had a gun it would have been of no use at all.

The best option was my hands and they did what they had to do. I did come out on top after about 2 minutes of fighting. The reason a gun would have been no good is because the altercation was full contact the entire time and it was an extreme close quarters fight. The gun would not have been a viable option.

I like threads like these because people learn from people who have, not from people who haven't or got thier training from a book or class.....

I will share what ever I have done, If 1 person gains something from it, it will be worth while....

I was attacked by a much younger much bigger Man then myself, with the intent it seemed to rip my head off.Having an 8 pound sledgehammer in the back of my pickup truck,I planted deep in his ribcage as a last resort. After much legal wrangling I did 30 days, seems in NYS if you have the ability to run away from an attack, but you stand your ground your dead meat. The attacker received $500.000.00 from the establishment, this fiasco took place at for damages.

I have had an issue or three. The only one worth noting happened a long
time ago (before my CCW). I lost a little blood, they lost a little blood, all in
all not too bad of a situation considering how things could have gone. Although
he did try to see if he could put a metal cane through my head.

Yes.... I was in the wrong place at the wrong time (dark field between shopping centers).
Yes.... I did smart off to the wrong person (guy came up to me stating he hated people
who smoke.. you can guess what I did).
Yes.... it could have been avoided (not walking through dark field/not blowing smoke in guys face).

Heck... he was not even the one who attacked me.

In the end I was still standing, they were running, and no charges were pressed against me.

Big shiny knife (thrower) that reflected the moon light just right to make the other 7
attackers think you have a gun.... Priceless.

Yes........ dumb all around but I was young, dumb, and..... well young and dumb anyway.

The gun would not have been a viable option.

That is the way it goes many times. Drawing takes more time than one may have.
Knowing other forms of SD are a must.... options are a good thing.

Just once, many many many moons ago when I was a teenager. Was a very good lesson about being situationally aware.

Was coming home from an orthodontist appointment and decided to stop downtown before I went home. Went to Woolworths and picked up some candy and soda, something like that. I had a wallet full of $1 bills. Easy to understand how it could appear I was carrying a 'stack', but it was about 20 dollars in ones I had saved up.

So I get out of Woolworth and start the trek home, only about a mile through a residential neighborhood with sidewalks. As I was walking, I passed this older kid. He didn't raise an suspicion. When I passed him, he was kneeling on the ground, tying his shoe. I said, "What's up?", he said, "What's up?" and I continued on my way.

5 minutes later, I feel someone rush me from behind and he's got a dinky little pocket knife and he wants my money. I was caught completely offguard and just handed him the change I had from my busride that was in my pocket. Then, things hit me... He says, "I know you got more, I want all of it!!!!". At this point, I give him my wallet and he takes off.

Hindsight being what it was, I realized, I was an IDIOT!!!!!! He wasn't psychic, he was behind me at the Woolworths and saw me take out the money. That's how he knew. He also didn't coincidentally need to tie his shoe, it was the setup. And with that, I learned to always be aware of my surrondings. Not just what, but who and what who is doing.

Thanks so far to all

Thanks so far to all that posted. It is very helpful for everyone and I've read that any crime victim tends to keep from speaking about these things - so I know it may not be easy to relate some events. But the more crime is spoken of the less it happens for all become aware. We become dumb with silence.

20 years ago, I was confronted by a poor, mis-unnerstood, yoot holding a pocket knife at his side. He asked for "a dollar". Being young and dumb, I asked "Is that all you got"? I pulled a much larger knife from my pocket. He stood there for a second, then walked away mumbling.

Last summer, I was accosted by three yoots while pumping gas at 0300. Being older and dumber, I let fly with corse language and brandishing a revolver.

Simply living in a city, in working class neighborhoods, there have been numerous thefts, damages and vandalism. Most people seem to believe its part of life. I strive to improve my situation to get in better neighborhoods. Although, at my rural property, the crick gypsies will steal the light bulbs from the sockets...

Typically, when you need a gun it'll be somewhere guns laws have disarmed you

And that's why I either won't be there or barring metal detectors, will be armed. I avoid criminal safety zones unless required to be there by force of law.

I voted 'I have.' If the choice had been there, I would have voted for 'I have been-on several occasions.'

Near 40 years ago I, along with 4 friends were jumped by a gang of hoods in a neighboring city. They all had knives and seemed willing to use them. What were we doing in their "territory," crap like that. After not getting the answers they wanted they decided beating us senseless was the best course of action. All but the one friend that was from that city, of course. Since they outnumbered us about 3 to 1, there wasn't a whole lot of time to take any 1 of them out because they were all helping each other. I came away bloody in many spots, so did most of my friends. One buddy, though, got a few really good licks in; he was always a badass. I watched him damn near cave the biggest one's chest in and I swear he broke another's nose. I swore back then that would be the last time anybody did that to me. Hell, I wasn't quite 15 back then and still growing. When I got to full size of 6'3", boxing, wrestling, self-defense, weightlifting, and full weight of 245 lbs, nobody bothered me anymore.:D I like it like this, no violent encounters on my person since that one night. Maybe a few bar scrapes in later years, but that was generally fighting my way to the door to get the hell out. Also a few possibles that I may have thwarted with harsh language or shifting my stance, etc.

But I still carry a gun, just in case.:D

45 years ago, robbed by knife point, took all of five dollars. But he was nice enought to leave my billfold.

I never thought the front end of a 1911 was really very big until I saw it in the hand of the Tiajuana Policia who basically robbed me of the last $10 I had.

Haven't been back since, . . .

May God bless,
Dwight
