This is a rather long article analyzing concealed carry. It is for the most part negative and portrays CCW types as a touch off and the concept as dangerous.

It does have interesting graphics and figures.

It analyzes the Utah system and a class (which seems competent to me) but the author seems to disparage.

It attacks the evil NRA and any attempts for national reciprocity as sinking to the lowest common denominator.

The author claims progun creds by being a NJ rifle champion. Ah, the sportsmen - the arbitrators of the 2nd Amend. Blah.

Sure, just a touch off, but he won't stoop to open insults. After all, he's a rifleman, which means he's one of us. Therefore, he gets to put himself in the emotionally smug but intellectually satisfying position of being confused and affronted when the rest of us just won't play ball and accept a few commonsense "gun safety" measures.

It's the same strategy the Giffords and AHSA are using. Invent "moderate" gun owners who just want a few little nibbles, then portray the rest of us as lackeys in the thrall of the extremist NRA.

Midterms are coming up. Expect lots of more of this, brought to you by moderate gun-owner groups like Mayors against Illegal Guns and Americans for Responsible Solutions.

Fair amount of inaccuracy in that. I am retired Navy so the statement that issuing based on prior service exempts people from background checks for purchasing guns or CC caught my attention. That is not true in any place I know of. But a DD 214 can substitute for the training requirement in many states. Then he went on to hint that we are all mentally ill and have PTSD along with our no checks gun buys and CC permits.

His descriptors for the people he talked to also seamed to be canted to invoke negative stereotypes. He also made an unnecessary point of mentioning that there was only one African American in the class.

I think he thought he was being subtly clever with this article. He failed on all fronts, in my opinion.

This is a common ploy, the NY Times shows some high end sportspeople and the rest of us are nuts. They currently have a picture show of such - not going to bother to link to it.

Once again - I say - drop the modern sporting rifle crappola. It's a surrender to such a portrayal.

If a gun is for sport then it is perfect to regulate and control.

PS - Washington Post having commentary on pro and anti gun ads.

Celebrity ads are not useful for the antis.

There is little middle ground on gun control measures.

Maybe meaningful measures on mental health could be made

One commentator thinks Daniel Defense should reach out to women also.

A great piece suggesting that sports teams stand up for antigun principles and walk off the field during the world series.

I thought the most troubling part of the article was that half the class said they had left a loaded firearm back at home.. There was no mention of why or if they were secured. Since it was brought up during a safe handling segment, I assume it was to point out that was bad. The top drawer or the old shoe box is not.good enough. Maybe I am on the extreme side, but if it is not on me in my control, its locked up. I do not live alone. Even if I did, I wouldnt want the neighbor kid stealing tv's to get it

NY Times on the NRA and Manchin whining. Predicts ultimate victory for antigunners by using emotion to get universal background checks and then go for the total AWB.

One note - in the article Chucky Schumer says he grew up in NYC and didn't know anyone who had a gun. Maybe he should have gone to Macy's that used to sell milsurp rifles. I remember that. Said that as a comment - see if they post it.

I took the Utah CCW course with Perrin Lewis just about two years ago. He is an excellent instructor, and his course is thorough, and efficiently run.

The article in question i find to be obviously slanted, and subtly derogatory. The author makes an attempt to portray the setting as downscale - imagine, a hornet's nest in an outdoor range! - and the people involved as far from his personal standard of association. He's playing to the snob appeal of the typical NYT reader, without being so in-your-face with his comments, preferring to let the descriptions do their work.

He takes great pains in enumerating the downside of concealed carry, as he and presumably his readership would see things, but refrains from mentioning any possible positive aspects. Florida has issued more than a million permits, and, surprisingly, not only are the streets not running with blood, but the permit holders seem to be, statistically, one of the most law-abiding groups you can find. This sort of thing does not appear in the article.

It's hard for me to tell whether the author is ignorant and/or not possessed of a logical mind, or if he just writes this sort of thing for the money. Certainly he has forfeited any claim to my respect; I can only wonder whether he possesses any sense of personal integrity, at all.
