Politicians used to heed pro-gun voters.

In the 1960's in Pennsylvania, any state politician who ran afoul of the state's hunters and gun owners found himself defeated at the next election. Why? Because those gun owners VOTED!

How many gunowners are in the USA? The typical figure is 80 million. How many people voted in the last few presidential elections? Somewhere around 100 million? If ALL gunowners simply VOTED against gun control politicians, there would be NO gun control. If they voted for pro-concealed-carry sheriffs, there would be no anti-CCW sheriffs except in liberal metro and resort counties.

If...

If the dog hadn'ta stopped to take a dump, he woulda caught the rabbit...

Unfortunately, I've found out recently that a few gun owners I know that *do* vote, are voting for algore.

I tell 'em to take their guns with them to the polls and just turn them in. Save a lot of trouble later on. They think I'm paranoid. Maybe I am. Maybe not. We'll see in November.

I have relatives that are gun owners that think Clinton is the best President we have ever had (they are not joking either). They seem to think that the only thing he did wrong was get a BJ, and got caught. These same gun owners are also always buying guns, going hunting, and out at the range often. That side of the family have always voted Democrate in any election (local, state, or for the Presidencey). They tend to back their side up with BS, and won't hear any different.

Don't forget about the '94 (?) national elections: even Clinton acknowledged that gun owners were responsible for taking Congress away from the Democrats. Pro-gun voters ARE a powerful force; we're just in a big political fight that the media refuses to cover.

IMHO, the biggest mistake we make is believing that most gun owners believe in the RKBA. No kidding.

For example, (donning flame suit ;) ) many hunters I have met seem very narrow minded regarding any firearm other than their chosen ones. Bird hunters don't see a need for rifles. Muzzle loaders don't see why anyone needs anything else. A lot of them don't see any need for a sidearm, or certainly a 'concealable' sidearm.

Unfortunately, a large number of people that own firearms are (1) very ignorant of the RKBA and why we have it, (2) intolerant of others' firearms, (3) susceptible to the demonization of things like flash suppressors, bayonet lugs, magazine capacity, (4) uninformed as to the benefits of CCW, and (5) seem to feel that as long as they have their guns, everyone else can take a leap.

Examples - Friend back east has a S&W revolver for home defense. But, he continues to believe I'm some kind of Rambo because I load my revolver with the dreaded hollow point bullets. Doesn't matter how many times and ways I explain ammunition to him ... he and his wife are convinced I'm somehow off the deep end because of my ammo choice. They're voting for Gore because of the abortion issue. Another example - friend has a couple firearms that will perhaps run afoul of their state's firearms laws. When I notify them, they say 'Oh, they'll never come for them.' I don't think they plan to vote at all.

The lesson? From my perspective, we need to educate gun owners almost as much as fence sitters. The rabid, anti-self defense gun bigots are a waste of time.

IMHO.

Jeff, no need to don a flame suit. What you're saying is the gospel truth. Gore's been offering the middle class a lot of free lunches, and there's _way_ too many folks out there who want a free Big Mac. A gun-owning neighbor who was a Perot voter is going for Gore because he thinks the corporations wield too much power. Will Gore make a difference in that respect? H*ll no. Meanwhile, this neighbor is telling me that guns will _never_ be registered in the USA, because the citizens wouldn't stand for it. After he told me that, I explained New York. And California. And I told him about the comments in the Fifth Circuit Court on the Emerson case. He was still unfazed. "Can't happen here," he said.

WTF is going on? Can't these people see who's behind Gore on RKBA? Guys like Josh Sugarman and Pete Shields? And what their agendas are?

I'm not a hunter. Never have been. Why, I don't know. But I would imagine a good time to go after your prey is when they've got a full belly and are slower to move. And there's lots of people on the political plains with full bellies.

I would bet ya'll a beer that those folks your talking about get their news from the big 4 on tv.....and we know which direction that is taking....as was mentioned earlier, Ive found in discussions with liberals or democrats that have few to no facts they normally just paraphrase the media and they are willing to excuse anything as long as it dosent require effort on their part. But they will work their butts off to get Joe Democrat elected in local elections....I would have thought that this year gun owners would turn out in force, I suppose we will all find out in November. For the last several weeks ive been getting a bad feeling concerning this election. ....fubsy....

Gun owners are a large and powerful group. They have turned elections in the past and their presence will be felt this goround. Riddle me this Bat Persons. Why is gun control no where to be heard so far this election? I think it is a looser for the Dems and an ace in the hole for the Repbs.

How many gunowners and who will vote. Who knows. But do the math. Assume 80 million is a nice round figure. Lets assume only one in ten (that's 10%) vote for only that reason only. that's 8 million new voters. Let's assume one in four (that's 25%) vote second amendment issues. That's 2 million voters to be thrown into a variety of close state elections. Is there any other special interest group that potentially large that can be dropped into an election? I think not.

Gun owners do not feel threatened yet.

Waitone, I will yield to your analysis of the numbers. But your assertion that gun owners don't feel threatened yet can be read a number of ways. Have the duck hunters had their double shotguns banned? Not yet. Have the deer hunters had their .30-06's banned? Not yet. And they won't start squealing like the stuck pigs that they are until they've been stuck. Twenty or thirty years ago a politician would be committing suicide by advancing the "for the children" ideas now embraced by the likes of Al Gore. Imagine the fate of a 1965 candidate advocating that anyone who legally owns a gun must be fingerprinted and photographed like a common criminal. Imagine the subscription cancellations to any newspaper that supported the idea. Now, with the aid of touchy-feely soccer moms whose political winds follow those of Rosie and Oprah, those of us who own guns are treated like the KKK. Or, worse, we are equated with the KKK.

Gore has dropped gun control from his front burner issues. His staff probably sees that they need the Midwest states--hunting states--to carry the election. We must get these folks to realize that Gore wants all the guns. But how do you get them to pay attention when they're looking at all of the $$$ that his "targeted tax cuts" are going to give them?

Sorry for the rant. Most gun owners have less
political knowledge than the barrels of their guns.
