polishing stainless

For Brushed SS use a very light 3M Final Stripping Pad with oil, work with the grain and work slow. This method takes practice but will make SS pistols look new again. It only works on brushed SS. Don't use it on polished SS
Start out on some scrap stainless if you have some or a part of your pistol that does not show and work slowly and very lightly.
For SS that has been polished I would recommend mothers polishing cream, also a lead Crocus cleaning cloth.

For cleaning stainless you can use a vinegar/ water solution
For polishing stainless you can use a Baby lotion/ water solution

both in a ratio of 1 : 6
Use sparingly and you will be impressed with the results.

For SS guns, I've found two things work very well:

Flitz polish or Lead Away Cloths (several different brands). Both are non-abrasive and require a little elbow-grease, but they do a great job of cleaning and polishing SS.

Don't use the Lead Away cloths on blued surfaces and they may discolor/remove the bluing.

Good post

I can tell you have done it before !
Just to add one thing, study the brushed grain and go with that, keeping a STRAIGHT LINE as the original finish. I use the grey "Scotch brite".
