Polishing brass hardware

What's the best way to get a smooth, mirror-like finish on a muzzleloader's brass hardware? I read in a book to start polishing with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, then buff with 0000 steel wool, and finish with brass polish. Does this sound right? Any tips or techniques you folks could share?

Thanks,

Good for you to read a book. I use a file and then whatever emerypaper I have at hand. If I was at Lassen College, I'd waltz over to the buffing machines.

BTW, I wasn't laughing at you. I read books (including gunsmithing books) all the time and I still scratch my head and ask myself: "how dey do dat?"
