Polished Steel

I've got three of them - 2 in .44 and one in .36 - finish is tough as nails. Cylinder face will stain; but a little simichrome polish takes care of it.

Fingers, I have an 1860 now in the polished steel. I was wondering if the finish is a coating of some sort? I'm thinking of browning it like my others.
 
Doggone you guys, do you know how hard I try to not look at Cabela's web site? It seems like every time I do, my bank account takes a hit, followed by my body taking a hit from my wife! And now you're actually posting links right to the very items! Enablers...that's what you are!

I have no idea what Pietta uses on them. The only thing I've been able to get out of them is that it they are highly polished in-the-white with a stainless like finish - whatever that means. You might try the browning on an inconspicuous spot - like on the inside of the backstrap where the grips would cover it if it didnt turn out well.

One of the .44s I bought used, had some rust spots on the cylinder. The guy I bought it from, to put it mildly, did a poor job of keeping it clean after firing. I used a dremel with polishing wheel and some jewlers rouge to clean the spots. Havent had any recurrence of rust or corrosion in those areas since, and you almost can't tell where the spots were.

Yeah, they're sure purty, and shoot pretty good too.

thanks for the welcome Fingers, I really like the grips you have on your gun. By the way, I did quite a bit of work in Jeff City, and Owensville last year, not sure if that is near you or not, nice country up there.
 
The grip frame and grips are from a GWII. I've never liked the Pietta '51 Navy grips.

Jeff City and Owensville are about an hour and a half from me. I'm in Waynesville. It is beautiful country. I love it here in the Ozarks - except when we get an ice storm and lose power for a week.

Next time you get up this way stop by for a visit.

florida gun works has these for around $259.00. been wanting one myself. should"ve known that fingers done had few:D
thinking real hard the last few months about buying one myself,gun fund low now since i bought a ruger markII a couple months back, plus the wife gives me that look when i mention buying another. hmmmmmm....but then again she never noticed the new rifle or even knew that i"d gotten one. said it looks like all the rest about the house. then she said just how many guns do you have?... told her i"d have to get back with her on that one:D.
 
Fingers . . . . you guys are really stirring things up by posting links to Cabelas and then having the gall to post the photo even of your revolver! I had a similar revolver - not as pretty as yours but it was a short barreled older Navy Arms. It was a great shooter but . . . . I had a weak moment this week and used it for trading stock towards a Colt Special Army in 38 special that was made in 1909 - a really pristine one! NOW . . . after seeing your photo of your pistol and the link to Cabelas . . . . I'm a getting the "ITCH" again! I'm in a quandry now as I know better than to get another revolver this soon after getting my Colt Special Army . . . . . I have an understanding wife in regards to the addiction we all have . . . but I am trying to reform. Does anyone out there have a name of a good Black Powder Rehab Center???? I'm a fightin' the urge as best I can . . . . . . :D Sigh . . . so many revolvers . . . so little time . . . . . .

Mike in NC - sorry . . . . I was so flustered by all the talk about this great looking revolver and the picture that Fingers posted of his that I forgot to welcome you to the forum! So . . . . . Welcome Mike!!!

There is a great group of guys here - lots of knowledge . . . and a few spoonfuls of "fertilizer" as well. :rolleyes: I hope we see a lot of you here! If you are in NC . . . . keep your ears open when you're outside for loud booms. If the wind is blowing in your direction, you'll probably be able to hear Doc Hoy shooting his latest "ordinance purchase". :)

If you're a reading this Doc . . . . I hope you'll post a photo of it once you have the wheels mounted on it!? :D I really am anxious (seriously) of hearing a range report of what you think of it when you've had a chance to put it though its paces on the range. :)

Sorry BBB, there is no cure ;). Every rehab center established has gone out of business cause of the 100% relapse rate :rolleyes:. Just give in to the siren call.

Finally gettin back to you, Mike,

Had occassion to drive through your area not too long ago. Danged nice part of the state. Took a ride out to the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad. (I like trains.)

I do my shootin out on Knott's Island NC, just south of the Virginia line.

Don't get down there often enough to suite me.

I heard info that says the metal of those "polished steel" guns is specially hardened to resist rust. Came from Pietta supposedly. Makes sense to me.
